We just went through an intense heatwave here in California, and let me tell you, Anaheim got hit hard. I’m talking temperatures in the 100s at Disneyland, and it was no joke trying to get through a full day outside. After surviving seven weeks in a row of insane heat at the parks (yes, you read that right, seven!), I learned a thing or two about how to keep cool and not let the sun melt your mood.
Sure, the wait times were low (hallelujah!), but we spent most of our time running from shop to shop and chilling in restaurants just to hide from that scorching sun. I’m here to tell you the heat will definitely get to you if you’re not prepared—trust me. That’s why it’s so important to practice sun safety and plan ahead to avoid any type of sun sickness or sunburn.
So, to help you out, I’ve put together this list of everything you need to survive a hot summer day at Disneyland. With the right gear, a little prep, and some smart planning, you’ll do great. Let’s dive in!

What to Pack for Summer at Disneyland
Umbrella
A small, compact umbrella can be a lifesaver under the blazing California sun. It’s especially useful when you’re standing in those long, uncovered lines.
Large Brim Hat
A wide-brimmed hat is a great way to shield your face, neck, and shoulders from direct sunlight. Look for one that’s breathable so it won’t trap heat and make you feel warmer than you already are.
Sunglasses
Polarized sunglasses are a must for protecting your eyes from the strong UV rays and for reducing the glare that bounces off all those bright surfaces in the park.
Sunscreen SPF 30+
Don’t forget the sunscreen! A broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher is essential for protecting your skin all day. Be sure to reapply it every couple of hours, especially if you’ve been on water rides or are sweating a lot.
Cooling Towel
Cooling towels are an absolute game-changer in the summer heat. Soak one in water, wring it out, and drape it around your neck for an instant cooldown. It’s a simple but highly effective way to keep your body temperature down.
Portable Fan
A battery-powered portable fan is a must-have to stay cool in line. The ones that hang around your neck are particularly convenient because they keep the air moving without you having to hold anything. I have both a neck fan and a handheld fan, I find myself always packing my rechargeable handheld fan.
Water Bottle with Hydration Supplements
Staying hydrated is the key to surviving a hot day at Disneyland. Carry a refillable water bottle and stop at water fountains throughout the day. Adding hydration supplements can help replenish lost electrolytes and keep you feeling fresh.
@julia.vaness Had to pack the essentials today for Disneyland. It was a high of 92 in Anaheim but the parks felt even hotter. Its very easy to get dehydrated at the parks when youre distracted by rides. Please take breaks, hydrate, wear sunscreen. Pack a hat, sunglasses and umbrella. And use a fan and cooling towel to keep you from overheating. #tipsfordisneyland #summeratdisneyland #disneytips #disneyparks #disneyday #whattopackfordisneyland #heatatdisneyland #hotdaysatdisneyland #packingfordisneyland ♬ original sound – Julia Vaness
Essential Items to Pack for Disneyland
Moleskin or Band-Aids
After a long day of walking, especially in the heat, blisters can become a real issue. Pack some moleskin or band-aids to cushion sore spots and prevent your feet from slowing you down.
Pain Relievers and Medicine
A small stash of Advil or Tylenol is helpful for those inevitable headaches or body aches that can come from long hours in the sun and on your feet. Don’t forget your Pepto or TUMS too, to help with an upset stomach.
Universal Waterproof Phone Pouch
Between water rides and those unexpected splash zones, your phone can easily get wet. A universal waterproof phone pouch lets you keep your device safe while still snapping pics of all the magic.
Portable Charger
The summer heat can drain your phone battery faster than usual—especially when you’re using it for photos, mobile orders, and checking ride wait times. A portable charger will ensure your phone stays powered up all day long!
Tips for Handling the Heat at Disneyland
A hot day at Disneyland requires more than just the right gear. Here are some pro-tips to ensure you don’t overheat while still having a magical time:
Take Breaks Often
When the sun is relentless, taking frequent breaks can make all the difference. Duck into shops or take a breather on slow, indoor rides like Pirates of the Caribbean—it’s cool, dark, and provides a welcome break from the heat. Another favorite of ours is the Enchanted Tiki Room—a short, air-conditioned show that’s perfect for cooling off without missing any of the fun.
Stay Hydrated
Staying hydrated is essential! Many quick-service spots throughout the park offer free cups of ice water, so don’t hesitate to stop by and grab one. Fill up your reusable bottle whenever you can, and make it a habit to hydrate with every meal to stay refreshed throughout the day.
Use the Disneyland App
Maximize your day by using the Disneyland app. You can check wait times, mobile order food, and manage your schedule with just a few taps. The best part? You’ll spend less time standing in the hot sun by avoiding unnecessary lines, which means more time for fun!
Plan Your Day Wisely
Timing is everything when it comes to beating the heat. Try arriving early in the morning or staying late into the evening when the weather is cooler. Avoid the midday heat by scheduling your indoor activities or taking a long, leisurely lunch during those peak hours.
Pack an Extra Charger
Hot weather tends to drain your phone battery faster, especially when you’re using it to snap photos and check the Disneyland app. Be sure to pack a portable charger so you’re not left with a dead phone when you need it most—whether it’s for photos, mobile ordering, or emergencies.
