If you’re anything like me, you’ve been counting down the days to Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios. I have to admit, I used to be absolutely terrified of Horror Nights and mazes. But about four years ago, I finally mustered up the courage to go, and holy smokes, it was the best time of my life.
Horror Nights has become a big tradition in our group. We look forward to it all year long, planning and plotting out every detail to make sure we have the best experience possible. There’s just something magical about getting scared out of your wits with your best friends by your side.
This post is all about planning a group trip to Halloween Horror Nights.
Navigating HHN with a large group can be quite an adventure. We’ve gone with as many as 10 people before, which is a lot of folks to wrangle through mazes and fog-filled streets. But with the right tips and tricks, your group can have a blast without losing anyone in the fog.
Let’s dive into the tips that will make your HHN adventure terrifyingly amazing! 🎃👻
Tips for Going to Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights with a Large Group
I know you’re going to have the best time ever at HHN. And it’s okay to be a little afraid—that’s the whole point! The scares, the screams, the laughter —it’s all part of the experience. So, don’t let the fear stop you from having the night of your life.
I’ve put together my top tips for making the most of your group trip to Halloween Horror Nights. From what passes to purchase to dressing on theme, I’ve got you covered.
1. Get an Express Pass
Yes, it’s a bit pricey, but trust me, it’s worth every penny. The lines for the mazes can get insanely long, and without an Express Pass, you might only get through a couple of them in one night. With the Express Pass, you’ll zip through lines faster and have more time to enjoy everything HHN has to offer, including select rides!
Horror Nights is the beginning of all the upcoming seasonal events, including events at other theme parks, pumpkin patches, and the holidays shortly after. I understand an Express pass is a lot of money to throw down for a single night. For us, it’s the only way we can guarantee we will see every maze. And then we can also do most rides with the pass too. It’s a win-win for us. Work out the budget beforehand with your friends. You want to make sure everyone has the same pass, regardless of the level.
2. Arrive Early
Plan to get there right when the gates open. We love a Horror Nights rope-drop moment! Arriving early gives you time to grab a quick drink before heading into your first maze, helping you avoid the rush of people that come later and also giving you that breathing room to go at a slower pace.
3. Enjoy Dinner Beforehand
To maximize your time inside HHN, have dinner with your group before you enter. Long lines for snacks and drinks inside can be a buzzkill. Last year, we got stuck in a line at The Weekend Bar for over an hour, and it threw off our entire night! Opt for a quick and easy meal outside the park to save time and keep the fun going.
4. Snap a Free Photo at the Psycho House
Don’t miss out on the free group photo op at the Psycho House on the Terror Tram. It’s a fantastic spot for a free photo with your crew. The line usually moves quickly for this one too, if there’s a line at all. Overall, it’s a great spot to snag a cute photo.
5. Have a Plan
With a large group, it’s easy to get separated. Make sure everyone is on the same page about arrival times, meeting points, and staying until closing. Establish a clear plan and stay connected throughout the night to avoid any hiccups. Always be flexible, but definitely plan.
6. Themed Group Outfit
I love matching with my friends so much! And this doesn’t mean you have to have every single thing match and be twins. I mean, find a fun matching shirt, or pick a horror movie to inspire your outfits. Or pick a genre like classic Universal Monsters or Slasher movies. Something fun to get everyone in the spirit.
7. Designate a Meeting Spot
In case anyone gets separated, having a designated meeting spot can save time and reduce stress. Choose a landmark that’s easy to find and set check-in times throughout the night.
8. Utilize the Universal Studios App
The Universal Studios Hollywood app is a great tool for navigating the park, checking wait times, and finding show schedules. Make sure everyone in your group has it downloaded before you arrive. Once you’re in the park you can easily check wait times for rides and mazes and be able to adjust your plans accordingly and keeps the group from splitting up to check times around the park.
9. Carpool
Stick together. It’s cheaper for parking and gas, but also it’s crazy packed and meeting up can be difficult. Make it easy on yourself and group and drive together. Plus, then you don’t have to drive home alone at night after being chased by zombies for hours. Get home safe, kids!
Planning a Trip to Halloween Horror Nights
Now that we live in San Diego, we like to make it a mini-vacation trip and stay the night at a hotel near Universal Studios. It adds to the cost, but it’s a once-a-year tradition for us, so we’re more than happy to splurge! There’s something extra special about making a whole mini-vacation out of our Halloween Horror Nights adventure.
To wrap things up, remember: upgrade to an Express Pass, arrive early, have dinner beforehand, and definitely snap a free group photo at the Psycho House. Make sure you have a plan and a designated meeting spot, dress comfortably (or thematically), and utilize the Universal Studios app to keep track of everything. And don’t forget, carpooling can make your trip a lot easier and more fun!
Be sure to check the Universal Studios Hollywood website for the latest ticket prices and maze details. Planning ahead is key to ensuring your group has the best time possible. I genuinely can’t wait for your group to experience the thrills and chills of Halloween Horror Nights. Embrace the fear, enjoy the scares, and most importantly, have a blast!
Happy haunting! 🎃👻

Julia
