Come pack and prep with me for our upcoming Disney Halloween Cruise from San Diego! Hereās how Iām planning outfits, packing, researching, and getting cruise-ready before embarkation day.
Come Pack & Prep With Me for Our Disney Halloween Cruise
Why am I so excited for this cruise? Umm⦠itās a Disney Cruise!!!! AND itās a Halloween Cruise!!! Thereās just so much happiness already. I canāt hold it back!!!
If you know me, you know that I love the planning part of a vacation almost as much as the actual vacation. I want to know everything. What are we wearing? What are we eating? What activities do we need to book? What should I pack in our room? What will the weather be like? What are we doing in port? And, most importantly, what am I forgetting?!
I love a list. I love a spreadsheet. I love researching the tiniest detail months before I actually need to know it. Basically, I am a Vacation Prepper through and through.
And this cruise has given me A LOT to prep for.
This will be our first Disney Cruise sailing from San Diego, our first Halloween on the High Seas cruise, our first three-night Disney Cruise, our first time visiting Ensenada, AND our first time staying in an inside stateroom.
Soā¦yeah. My planning brain is very happy right now hahaha.
I thought it would be funāand hopefully helpfulāto take you through the entire process with me. From what Iām booking and buying to my 15-outfit packing plan, San Diego weather, cabin essentials, snacks, Halloween accessories, and everything else taking over my brain before embarkation day.
If you have your own Disney Cruise from San Diego coming up, especially a Halloween on the High Seas sailing, hopefully my slightly excessive planning can make your planning a little easier.

Why This Disney Cruise Feels Different
This is our first San Diego Disney Cruise!! And our first Halloween on the High Seas cruise. And our first three-night cruise.
Soā¦a lot of firsts.
Even though weāve been on a Disney Cruise before, this one feels completely different. A three-night cruise is SHORT, which means we have a lot less time to fit everything in. There are fewer opportunities to book certain activities, and we have to be a little more strategic about what we actually want to do onboard.
Weāve also never cruised out of San Diego before, which is kind of funny considering we live here. But this is still an entirely new experience for me, and obviously I must know every single detail ahead of time hahaha.
And OMGāI almost forgot another first.
This is our first inside cruise cabin!!!
Iām excited, but Iām also a little nervous about having zero natural light. So naturally, I have done an excessive amount of research about what to pack for an inside stateroom. More on that later because I have THOUGHTS.
And then thereās Ensenada. Iāve never been!
Basically, I have a lot of questions, a lot to plan and a lot to pack.
Letās get into it.
How Iām Researching Before Our Disney Cruise
Before a trip, I kind of develop a one-track mind. Suddenly all of my free time is spent thinking about the trip.
YouTube videos? Watching them.
Reddit threads? Reading them.
Blog posts? Twenty tabs open.
Outfits? Constantly scrolling.
Port adventures? Researching.
Restaurant menus in Ensenada? Obviously.
Iāve created an entire Google Sheet with multiple tabs researching everything from our port arrival to debarkation day.
I LOVE LISTS!!!
I also keep track of every question I have while Iām planning. If I have a question, I know there has to be someone else planning a Disney Cruise who has the exact same question. I do the research, figure it out for my own trip, and then try to turn what I learn into something helpful here.
I know I cannot be the only Vacation Prepper out there hahaha.
Using the Disney Cruise Line App Before the Trip
I check the Disney Cruise Line app constantly.
Partly because I love seeing the countdown.
But Iām not going to lie – I still get confused about where everything is in the app sometimes. So I go through basically every section just to make sure Iām not missing anything.
This is where so much of the pre-cruise planning happens. Weāve used it to keep track of our reservation and activities, and weāll also use it as we get closer to sailing for check-in and other cruise details.
Right now, one of the biggest things left on our list is completing check-in and selecting our port arrival time.
And yes, we have reminders set.
Multiple reminders hahaha.
We want to get a good port arrival time, so this is absolutely not something Iām leaving to chance.
Checking San Diego and Ensenada Weather
Iāve also been checking the October weather in both San Diego and Ensenada.
Yes, I live in San Diego.
Yes, I am still Googling San Diego weather.
You never know!!

The weather has been so weird lately, and what I pack depends heavily on the forecast. Iāll start watching the general weather patterns ahead of time, but I donāt make my final outfit decisions until weāre much closer to embarkation.
Especially for a cruise, I want options for cooler mornings, warm afternoons, wind on the water, and evenings outside on the ship.
Preparing for October Weather on a Disney Cruise from San Diego
This is one area where I can give you a local perspective.
San Diego weather can vary, and this year has been especially weird. Weāve had full-on humid, Florida-feeling weather for what feels like forever.
But October in San Diego can be beautiful.
Mornings near the water can start cloudy, misty, and cooler, and then the day can warm up quite a bit. Once youāre out on the water, you also have the wind to think about.
Thatās why Iām planning around light layers.
I donāt want to pack giant jackets that take up half my suitcase, but I do want something I can throw over my outfit during a cooler morning or when weāre outside at night.
My biggest weather tip is to keep checking as your sailing gets closer.
I can plan all I want months ahead, but the actual forecast is going to make the final decision for me.
For my outfits, Iām planning pieces that I can easily layer so Iām not completely changing my packing list if the weather decides to surprise us.
What Iām Booking Before Embarkation
There is SO much to get excited about before a Disney Cruise.
And the longer your cruise, the more time you have to spread everything out. Weāre doing a three-night cruise, which is the shortest Disney Cruise weāve done, so there isnāt much time to fit in all the fun things.
But that certainly isnāt stopping us from trying.
Senses Spa Pass
We were able to book a pass for the Senses Spa, and we will absolutely be taking advantage of it.
We loved having spa access on our last cruise. We like going early in the morning, and my husband will sometimes go back again at night.
One of my favorite things to do is put on an audiobook, sit in the quiet area, and look out at the ocean.
Perfection.
I also love using the gym in the morning, so the spa and gym have become part of our normal cruise routine.
Disney Cruise Mixology Class
We also booked another Mixology class!
We did Mixology on embarkation day during our last cruise and had such a good time. This time, we couldnāt get the class until the evening of our second day.
Thatās one thing Iām already noticing about a three-night cruise: there just arenāt as many opportunities to move things around.
On a longer sailing, you have more nights and more time slots. On a three-night cruise, everyone is trying to squeeze those experiences into the same tiny window.
Iām starting to think four nights might be my sweet spot for a shorter Disney Cruise, but weāll see how I feel once we actually experience three nights!
Trying to Book Palo Brunch
The one thing I couldnāt get was Palo brunch.
Noooooo!
Thereās really only one day during our sailing when brunch makes sense, so naturally everyone else wants it too.
Weāve already done Palo dinner on a previous Disney Cruise, so I really wanted to try the brunch that everyone talks about.
Iām not giving up yet.
Once weāre onboard, Iām going to check again and see if there are any last-minute openings. Fingers crossed!
Planning Our Day in Ensenada
We havenāt booked an official Port Adventure for Ensenada.
Instead, weāre planning to spend the day exploring on our own.
So far, Iāve found a breakfast spot, a couple of lunch options, and a winery that Iām interested in. We want to walk around, eat, explore, and take our time instead of packing the day with activities.
Apparently, I am planning our Ensenada itinerary around food.
Which sounds about right.
Disney does offer Port Adventures that you can reserve before your sailing, and if there is something you REALLY want to do, I would absolutely look into booking it ahead of time instead of waiting until youāre onboard.
What Iām Packing for Our Disney Halloween Cruise
What am I packing?
Everything.
WEāRE NOT FLYING!!!
Do you understand how exciting this is for an over-packer?!
I donāt have to worry about airline luggage limits or checking bags. My husband suggested that maybe we could share one suitcase.
That will not be happening.
I love options. I love accessories. I love themed outfits. And I will absolutely be bringing my own giant suitcase.
Start With the Important Disney Cruise Essentials
Before we get into the fun stuff, start with the things you actually need.
For us, that means our required travel documents, identification, luggage tags, medications, prescriptions, and anything else we absolutely cannot replace once we leave home.
I like to get all of this organized ahead of time rather than running around the night before trying to remember where I put my passport.
Pack an Embarkation Day Carry-On
Do not put everything in your checked luggage!
When you arrive at the cruise terminal, your larger luggage can be taken and delivered to your stateroom later. That means there can be a chunk of time when youāre onboard but donāt have access to everything you packed.
I keep all of my important documents and anything I might want during those first few hours with me.
If you want to head straight to the pool, for example, keep your swimsuit, sandals, sunscreen, and anything else you need in your carry-on.
I also keep medications, electronics, chargers, valuables, and other important items with me.
Basically, ask yourself:
If my suitcase doesnāt arrive at my room until later this afternoon, what would I be upset that I donāt have?
Put those things in your carry-on.
Toiletries & Beauty Products
Cruises are one of those trips where I would rather be over-prepared with toiletries than under-prepared.
Youāre dealing with sun, wind, pools, ocean water, humidity, and lots of getting ready for dinner.
Iām packing plenty of SPF, after-sun products, hair products, and my normal skincare and makeup.
One thing I especially like having is a spray leave-in conditioner. Pool and ocean hair can get SO tangled, and this makes brushing it out so much easier.
Iām also bringing aloe vera and Vitamin E products for after-sun care because I would rather pack them and not need them than desperately wish I had them later.
My Inside Cabin Packing Plan – Disney Cruise
Okay. This is a BIG one for me.
This will be our first time staying in an inside cruise cabin.
No window.
No balcony.
No natural light.
I am very curious to see how I feel about it.
I think my biggest concern is waking up in a completely dark room and having absolutely no idea whether itās 3:00 AM or 9:00 AM.
So Iām preparing!
Sunrise Alarm Clock
A sunrise alarm clock immediately went onto my packing list.
I want something that gradually adds light to the room in the morning so waking up feels a little more natural.
Will this solve all of my problems?
Weāll find out hahaha.
Rechargeable Fan
I also want airflow.
Even if the cabin temperature is perfectly comfortable, I like having air moving when I sleep, so weāre bringing a small rechargeable fan.
Extra Lighting
Iām packing some additional lighting because I donāt want our only choices to be bright cabin lights or complete darkness.
I also like having good lighting when I do my hair and makeup, so Iām bringing a lighted travel mirror that I can use at the desk.
Also, extra nightlights help for everything – like not waking up my husband when I get the light switches confused and turn on the main light. hahaha
Magnetic Hooks & Cabin Organization
And obviously: magnetic hooks.
Cruise cabin space is limited, and clutter can make a small room feel even smaller.
My plan is to unpack immediately, put our suitcases under the bed, use the drawers and storage spaces, and get as much stuff off the counters as possible.
Iām bringing magnetic hooks for bags, hats, accessories, and other lightweight things we would otherwise throw onto a chair.
I know myself. If I donāt give everything a home, that room will be chaos by night two.
We are staying in an inside room. To help us keep it organized and to keep our insanity – we always pack a hamper.Ā
Its super easy to fold down and lightweight – it takes up no space in your luggage.Ā
And itās perfect to keep all our dirty clothes from being everywhere and getting mixed up with the rest of our clothes.Ā
Planning My Disney Cruise Outfits
For our three-night Disney Cruise, Iām currently planning about 15 outfits.
WAIT.
Before you freak out!!!
That includes pajamas, workout clothes, swimsuits, and everything else.
I break down my packing list by day and then by activity. Now that Iāve been on a Disney Cruise before, Iām also a little more realistic about how often Iām actually going to change.
Itās not as much as you think hahaha.
Hereās what Iām currently planning.
Day 1: Disney Cruise Embarkation Day Outfits
For embarkation day, Iām packing:
- Embarkation outfit
- Pool outfit
- Dinner outfit
- Simple relaxing outfit
- Pajamas
I want my embarkation outfit to immediately set the tone for the trip. Weāre going on a Halloween Disney Cruise, so why would I NOT start dressing for it immediately?
Day 2: Sea Day & Pirate Night Outfits
For our sea day, Iām planning:
- Workout/spa outfit
- Pool outfit
- Daytime outfit
- Pirate Night dinner/evening outfit
- Pajamas
This is probably our biggest onboard day, so I want options without packing five completely unnecessary outfits.
Day 3: Ensenada & Halloween on the High Seas Outfits
For Ensenada and our Halloween evening, Iām planning:
- Morning workout/spa outfit
- Comfortable Ensenada walking outfit
- Halloween evening/dinner outfit
- Relaxing late-night outfit
- Pajamas
My Ensenada outfit needs to be cute but practical because weāre planning on walking around a lot.
And then obviously I need a Halloween outfit.
OBVIOUSLY.
Day 4: Debarkation Day Outfit
Debarkation is easy.
Iām planning a simple, comfortable Disney-themed outfit.
We have to get off the ship pretty early, and since we live in San Diego, weāll most likely be heading straight home.
This is not the morning for an elaborate look.
Give me something cute, comfortable, and easy to throw on while Iām still half asleep.
Planning My Pirate Night Outfit
This is where I keep changing my mind.
Iām still stuck on Pirate Night.
Do I make an entire day out of it and pack a casual daytime pirate look AND an evening pirate look?
Do I just wear a normal outfit during the day and save everything for dinner?
These are the extremely important questions keeping me awake at night hahaha.
I definitely want to dress up, but Iām leaning toward a themed outfit rather than a full costume.
Lots and lots of accessories, though.
That part is non-negotiable.
My husband is making this very easy on himself and wearing the pirate shirt he bought for our last cruise.
Meanwhile, I apparently need an entire creative direction.
Planning My Halloween on the High Seas OutfitĀ
Halloween is another story.
This is our FIRST Halloween on the High Seas cruise, so I want to have fun with it.
Again, I donāt think Iām going to wear a full costume. I would rather create a very themed Disney Halloween outfit with fun accessories that I can comfortably wear to dinner, around the ship, and to the Halloween activities.
This is also where shopping for the cruise has gotten a little out of control.
Beauty Routine Before My Disney CruiseĀ
I love prepping for a trip!! I do a few things, nothing too crazy, but I do have my own little routine I stick to.Ā
First, we canāt be sick!! I make sure Iām taking all my vitamins and then load up on pressed juice shots.Ā
Feel free to make your own juice too. I did that for years but now Iām tired. Hehehe
I also do my whitening strips three times before the trip. I space them out around 4 days apart.Ā
Three times is perfect for me. I donāt want them looking fake white – just bright.Ā
This trip was different, because I also dyed my hair!! I havenāt done anything to my hair in years and it was time for a refresh.Ā

I didnāt dye it any crazy colors, just back to my dark brown but it came out so much better than my natural color. Its so warm and vibrant at the same time. I love it!Ā
Next, I was going to get my nails done but instead, I watched some tutorials and purchased a few new items and did my own manicure and pedicure.Ā
I knew I wanted to shop on the cruise, so Iād rather have cute Disney items than professional nails.Ā
I donāt normally get my nails done anyway, usually only for special occasions. So I didnāt feel like I was missing out.Ā
But if you normally get your nails done and itās already a line item in your budget – live it up!Ā
My sister and cousin always have the cutest nails!Ā

Lastly, I take an everything shower the night before. But really, I start kind of taking more luxurious showers the week of the trip.Ā
It just helps me feel fancy. Hahaha.Ā
I have a post on my complete everything shower routine if you want to check it out.Ā
What Iām Buying Before Our Disney Cruise
I have definitely already purchased a number of things.
And I still have more to buy.
AHHH! Donāt judge me!!
I really love accessories, and Disney trips give me an excuse to go a little crazy.
I love crazy. Itās okay.
My Disney Cruise Etsy Finds
Etsy has been dangerous.
Likeā¦dangerous dangerous.
I went in with a vision and apparently needed to execute the entire vision hahaha.
Iāve purchased themed buttons, Disney Cruise clothing, personalized goodies, and accessories for our outfits.
I love finding things that make the trip feel a little more personal, especially for something like a Disney Cruise where people really lean into the themes.
Amazon Cruise Essentials
Amazon has been more of my practical shopping.
Because this is our first inside stateroom, there were a few cabin items I specifically wanted to buy ahead of time.
This is where Iām looking for things like cabin organization, lighting, magnetic hooks, travel accessories, and other little items that should make the room more comfortable.
Not as exciting as Halloween accessories…
But still exciting to me hahaha.
What Iām Making for Our Disney CruiseĀ
Of course I had to do a couple little DIYs for our trip.Ā
Nothing too insane. But I did want to be festive in my own way.Ā
I made some cute beaded bracelets and was planning on making more to use for Pixie Dusting but yāall, I was tired. My bad!Ā
And then, I really wanted my own sailor hat for embarkation day!!Ā
I ordered the hat from Amazon and then sketched out the Disney Cruise logo and painted it and then covered it in glitter.Ā
Glitter is my favorite.Ā
Fish Extenders, Pixie Dust & Disney Cruise Door Decorations
Weāre not participating in an official Fish Extender group for this sailing, but we are planning to bring a few little Pixie Dust gifts.
We did something similar on our last Disney Cruise. Instead of committing to a full exchange, we brought small gifts and handed them out or left them for people whose doors we loved.
It was simple, fun, and there was no pressure.
So weāre doing it again!
Planning Our Halloween Disney Cruise Door
Which brings me to the DOOR!!!
I absolutely want to decorate our stateroom door.
Since this is Halloween on the High Seas, obviously weāre doing a Halloween theme.
The problem?
I cannot decide WHICH Halloween theme.
Do I just do Disney Halloween in general?
Do I choose one movie?
One character?
Something spooky?
Something cute?
I change my mind constantly and at some point I really just need to order the decorations hahaha.
What Snacks & Drinks Weāre Bringing on Our Disney Cruise
Packing snacks is a must for us.
Yes, there is SO much food included on a Disney Cruise.
But we like what we like.
Sometimes you donāt want to leave the room. Sometimes you want your favorite chips. Sometimes you want a protein shake in the morning. And sometimes you want candy while youāre watching a movie.
Bringing your own snacks can also be especially helpful if someone in your group has dietary restrictions, allergies, food aversions, or just very specific favorites.
Even on vacation, we still have our protein goals hahaha.
So weāre planning to bring Fairlife protein shakes and some protein-heavy snacks like beef jerky.
And then we have the important stuff.
Hot Cheetos because theyāre my favorite chips.
Tonyās Chocolonely because I need my chocolate.
And saladitosāthe spicy kindābecause they are one of my absolute favorite snacks.
Oh, and Iām packing instant noodles. Because I LOVE noodles on any and every vacation!
Weāre also celebrating our anniversary during this cruise, so weāre planning our drinks around that too.
The biggest thing here is to make sure you check Disney Cruise Lineās current food and beverage rules before packing. There are specific rules about what foods, drinks, and alcoholic beverages you can bring on board and where they need to be packed.
My Disney Cruise Packing Checklist
At this point, my master packing list is divided into categories because otherwise I WILL forget something.

Disney Cruise Packing & Planning FAQs
When should I start packing for a Disney Cruise?
I start planning WAY before I actually start putting things into a suitcase.
For me, packing begins with making lists, planning outfits, ordering anything I need, and figuring out what activities we have scheduled each day.
I would rather slowly prep ahead of time than realize the week before the cruise that I need to order five things that wonāt arrive before we leave.
How many outfits should I pack for a 3-night Disney Cruise?
It completely depends on how often you like to change.
Iām planning around 7 total themed looks for our three-night cruise, and then also my gym outfits, comfortable late-night outfits and my pajamas. Breaking your outfits down by day and activity makes the number much less scary.
What should I pack for Halloween on the High Seas?
Iām focusing on a Halloween-themed outfit, accessories, Disney Halloween items, and our Halloween stateroom door decorations.
You can absolutely go bigger with a full costume if thatās your thing. I personally want something themed and fun that I can comfortably wear around the ship for the evening.
What should I wear on a Disney Cruise from San Diego?
Layers!
Especially if youāre sailing during fall.
You may have a cooler or cloudier morning near the water followed by a much warmer afternoon. I like having a lightweight layer that I can easily take off and carry around instead of committing to a heavy jacket.
And always check the forecast right before your cruise.
What should I pack in my Disney Cruise carry-on bag?
Keep anything you absolutely need during the first few hours onboard with you.
For me, that includes our important documents, medications, electronics, valuables, sunscreen, and anything we might need before our checked luggage arrives.
If you want to swim immediately, keep your swimsuit, sandals, and pool essentials with you too.
I have a complete guide on what to keep with you on embarkation day for a Disney Cruise.Ā
What should I pack for an inside Disney Cruise stateroom?
Because this is our first inside cabin, Iām focusing on lighting, airflow, and organization.
Iām packing a sunrise alarm clock/light, rechargeable fan, lighted travel mirror, magnetic hooks, and organization items to help keep everything off the floor.Ā
Iāll report back after the cruise and let you know what we actually used!
What weather should I expect on a Disney Cruise from San Diego in October?
San Diego fall weather can vary, especially near the water, so I recommend packing layers and checking the forecast close to your sailing.
Iām planning for cooler mornings and evenings with warmer daytime weather, but Iāll make my final packing decisions once we have a reliable forecast.
Do I need to bring snacks on a Disney Cruise?
No! There is plenty of food on board.
We bring snacks because we like having our own favorites in the room and a few easy options when we donāt feel like going anywhere.
Just make sure you review the current Disney Cruise Line rules before packing food or beverages because there are restrictions on what you can bring onboard.
Final Thoughts: The Vacation Starts While Youāre Planning
I know I probably take vacation planning a little farther than most people hahaha.
But this is part of the fun for me.
Disney Cruises are expensive. Theyāre special trips, and for a lot of people, theyāre vacations you might plan for months or even years before you finally step onto the ship.
So I say enjoy the anticipation too.
Plan the outfits. Buy the silly accessories. Research the restaurants. Make your lists. Decorate your door. Watch the room tours. Get way too excited when the countdown in the app gets smaller.
You absolutely do not have to plan every tiny detail to have an amazing Disney Cruise. But if planning makes you happy, lean into it.
For me, the vacation doesn’t suddenly start when we walk onto the ship.
It starts months before, sitting at home with 17 tabs open, a giant packing list, an Etsy cart that needs to be stopped, and a countdown that I check way too often.Ā Ā Ā
And now weāre SO close!!!
I cannot wait to see which things we actually use, what I completely overpacked, what I somehow still forgot, and what I would do differently next time.
Iāll report back after the cruise.
XOXO,
Julia
