There isn’t a lot of information about restaurants outside of the downtown area in Singapore. Most reviews are focused on Hawker stations and maybe a few other popular neighborhoods but for locals, great food is all around.
During our week-long stay in Singapore, our friends showed us some great spots for fresh and local cuisine.
On our first night in Singapore, we visited Yi Jia South Village Seafood about 20 minutes outside of downtown with some traffic.
As Californians, traffic is nothing for us but in Singapore, driving 20 minutes is a big deal. So you know the food is worth it.
Here’s a breakdown of everything we enjoyed at the restaurant plus photos.
Menu at Yi Jia South Village Seafood in Singapore
This restaurant had a pretty extensive menu. Since it was our first time trying this restaurant we didn’t know what to order but luckily our friends took over and ordered several wonderful dishes.
Review of Yi Jia South Village Seafood in Singapore
We ordered seven dishes between the four of us and it was perfect. Like I said before, our friends did all the ordering and spoke with the staff. Everyone was very friendly there but it does help to have a local with you.
For drinks, we ordered a round of lime juice soda. It was a semi-salty but mostly sweet drink, kind of like Gatorade with a dried plum inside.
The dried plum reminded me of the Mexican candy saladitos, which is a dried plum with salt and chili. It’s my absolute favorite!
We loved these drinks and continued to order them throughout our trip.
For appetizers, we had the puffed garlic chips, always a favorite, and soy sauce braised peanuts. It was my first time trying braised peanuts and they were amazing!
I have to admit, I’m always nervous trying new things but I tried so much on this trip and loved it. I’m very proud of myself, especially for trying the frog legs – a must to order!
Our main dishes consisted of spicy noodles with mixed protein, fried squid with cereal, fried tofu, kung pao frog legs, honeydew prawns, salted egg fried pork, black pepper crab, and salted egg crab.
Noodles are an easy go-to dish for everyone and these spicy noodles didn’t disappoint. The fried squid was fun because the cereal topping was kind of sweet. I’m trying to remember what cereal it tasted like but whatever it was, it was delicious.
The fried tofu was good but it didn’t stand out against the rest of the items. Next time I would order something else instead of this dish. Tasty but you could find something more exciting.
The kung pao frog legs were a new one for me. I was very nervous to try them because I’m already uneasy about eating things off the bone, even chicken wings – I don’t eat them.
But I know it’s important to try things at least once, especially when you’re traveling.
The frog legs were very tasty and once my husband helped me and got the meat off the bones I enjoyed it hahaha. But as a texture-type thing (for me) I don’t know if I could eat more than a few pieces. But they were very tasty and no one else had any issues.
I’ve always had weird food sensory issues, so it was bound to come up at least once during our trip.
The honeydew prawns were my absolute favorite dish of the night. I could have eaten this entire dish on my own.
The creamy sauce with the prawns and honeydew (canteloupe) was phenomenal. 10/10!
The salted egg fried pork was a fun dish to order. Salted egg is very popular in Singapore, we had a ton of snacks and dishes with it.
These fried pork pieces were a nice add-on to our meal. Zero complaints from me. Another dish I would order again. Crispy, flavorful, and a great portion size.
The last two dishes to come out were the crabs! Singapore is known for their chili crab but we had tried that on our last trip so we wanted to have a little fun and try something new.
We ordered the black pepper crab and salted egg crab.
Both were beautiful dishes.
Once again, I have issues cracking animals – it creeps me out. So my husband had to help me but once all of the crab meat was out I ate every bit of it.
Both dishes had a ton of flavor and were the perfect size for the four of us.
Dining at Yi Jia South Village Seafood Restaurant
Overall, we loved dining at this restaurant. It was a great local spot, not crowded at all and the food and the service were wonderful.
I wanted to give as much information, along with photos, to get you excited to try a new restaurant on your next trip to Singapore.
I know it’s easy to stick to the main areas and popular downtown restaurants, but there are a ton of great local restaurants to try too.
Let me know if you’ve been here or if you’re planning on visiting during your next trip.
I’d be happy to answer any questions!
XOXO,
Julia
