Looking for the best things to do in Carlsbad Village? From local coffee shops and restaurants to bookstores, boutiques, beaches, and sweet treats, here’s my guide to spending the perfect day in one of North County San Diego’s most charming neighborhoods.
North County San Diego is my absolute favorite.
I’m definitely biased because I live here… but still. Hahaha.
Whenever friends or family come to visit, I’m always trying to convince them to spend at least one afternoon in Carlsbad Village. It’s one of those places that somehow manages to feel laid-back and lively at the same time.
You’ll find locally owned coffee shops on nearly every corner, incredible restaurants, cute boutiques, independent bookstores, beach walks, dessert spots, and some of my favorite places to simply slow down for a few hours.
I almost don’t want more people to discover it because I love that it still feels like a local spot.
But…
It’s just too good not to share.
Whether you’re visiting Carlsbad for the weekend, planning a Southern California road trip, or you’re a local looking for a new place to spend the day, here are my favorite things to do in Carlsbad Village.

Why Visit Carlsbad Village?

If you’ve never been to Carlsbad Village before, think of it as a walkable beach neighborhood filled with locally owned businesses.
I always like to call it Montrose by the beach.
One of my favorite things about it is that you can park once and spend the rest of the day walking everywhere.
Within just a few blocks you’ll find coffee shops, restaurants, shopping, dessert, the beach, and plenty of places to simply wander.
It feels relaxed, not fussy at all and you can easily spend an entire day there.
Coffee Shops in Carlsbad Village

If you’re anything like me, every good day starts with coffee.
Luckily, Carlsbad Village has no shortage of great coffee shops.
Some of my favorites include:
Every shop has its own personality, so it’s worth trying a different one each time you visit.
One of my favorite ways to spend a morning is grabbing an iced latte and walking through the Village before everything gets too busy.
OOO and a morning beach walk!!
Spend Time at the Beach

You can’t visit Carlsbad Village without making your way to the coast.
Whether you’re planning to spend the afternoon on the sand or simply take a walk along the water, the beach is one of the biggest reasons people love this area.
Sometimes we don’t even bring towels.
We’ll just grab coffee, walk along the coast, watch the waves for a while, and enjoy the sunshine.
Simple days are often the best days.
Browse Carlsbad Village Books

One of the newest additions to Carlsbad Village has already become one of my favorite stops.
Carlsbad Village Books is an independent bookstore that also has a café, gifts, fresh flowers, and both new and used books.
My sister and I spent well over an hour wandering through the shelves during opening week, and I already know it’s going to become one of our regular spots.
If you’re a fellow book lover, definitely make time to stop in.
Shop the Local Boutiques

One of the best things about Carlsbad Village is how many small businesses call it home.
Instead of big chain stores, you’ll find locally owned boutiques selling clothing, home décor, gifts, jewelry, and unique finds you probably won’t see anywhere else.
I always leave with something I wasn’t planning on buying.
Usually a candle.
Or a tote bag.
Or both.
Hunt for Vintage & Thrift Finds

If you enjoy thrifting, don’t skip this part of the Village.
There are several vintage and thrift shops where you can spend an afternoon treasure hunting.
Half the fun is not knowing what you’ll find.
Where to Eat in Carlsbad Village

This might honestly be the hardest section to write because there are so many great restaurants.
Some of my personal favorites include:
Campfire
One of my favorite restaurants in North County.
We’ve celebrated birthdays, special occasions, and random date nights here, and it’s always fantastic.
Señor Grubby’s
Perfect if you’re craving tacos after spending time at the beach.
Actually, its perfect before the beach too.
Tacos are always a good idea.
264 Fresco
One of my favorite places for pasta, cocktails, and rooftop dining.
If you can, try to visit around sunset.
The rooftop is beautiful.
Grab Dessert in Carlsbad Village

Carlsbad Village takes dessert very seriously.
Some of my favorites include:
- Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream
- The Goods Doughnuts
- Super Donut
- Aloha Ice for shaved ice
- Strawberry Shack
My husband is in love with Handels, my besties are obsessed with The Goods and I’m addicted to the Snack Shack. We all have our favorites.
Visit a Brewery or Wine Bar

If you’re planning a date night or spending the afternoon with friends, there are several breweries and wine bars throughout Carlsbad Village that make a great stop before dinner or while you’re exploring.
It’s another reason this neighborhood works just as well for adults as it does for families.
Breweries and Wine Bars in Carlsbad Village:
- Docent Brewing
- Pure Project Carlsbad
- Pizza Port Carlsbad
- Carruth Cellars Tasting Room
- Napatini Bistro and Wine Bar
- Little Victory Wine Bar
- Costa Azul Winery
Walk Along the Coast at Sunset

If you only do one thing in Carlsbad Village…
End your day with a walk along the coast.
There’s something about watching the sun set over the Pacific after a day spent eating good food, shopping small, and exploring that always reminds me why I love living here.
How I’d Spend the Perfect Day in Carlsbad Village

If I were planning the perfect Carlsbad Village day, here’s exactly what I’d do:
- Start with coffee from a local café.
- Wander through Carlsbad Village Books.
- Browse the boutiques and thrift stores.
- Walk down to the beach.
- Grab tacos or lunch.
- Treat yourself to ice cream or doughnuts.
- Stay for sunset before heading home.
Honestly…
That sounds like a pretty perfect day to me.

I’ve lost count of how many afternoons I’ve spent wandering around Carlsbad Village.
