Outfit Inspo for Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios
Horror Nights came and went so fast 😭
We were there and then poof – we weren’t
We had a lot of fun planning our outfits for Horror Nights this year. And we were a bit sad the boys didn’t dress up this year with us – like they did last year.
But we’ll give them a pass – just once though. Next year we’re back to group outfits!
This blog post is all about what to wear to Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios.
Let’s break down the outfits, give some tips on outfit planning and of course, a list of what you need to pack for the night.

What to Wear to Halloween Horror Nights
Comfort is key at Halloween Horror Nights. You’re going to be walking nonstop, standing in lines, and yes – running for your life through mazes.
Sneakers or your most comfortable boots are the only way to go. Trust me, from 7 PM until 2 AM (longer if you have early entry), you’ll be walking – so be prepared.
As for bags – go small. I know I’m usually team “big tote,” but Horror Nights is the exception.
Crossbody bags or belt bags are the way to go. Many rides require you to use lockers if your bag is too big, and you don’t want to be slowed down.
Smaller is better when you need to make quick moves in a scare zone.
Have fun with your outfit! Themed shirts, character-inspired looks, or even Halloween colors work perfectly.
You can’t cosplay at Horror Nights, but you can “bound.” That means dressing in a way that’s inspired by a character – similar vibes, not an exact copy.
It’s playful, easy, and keeps you in the spirit of the night.
At the end of the day, plan for comfort first and then layer on the fun themes!
What to Pack for Halloween Horror Nights
I take bag packing very seriously, and Horror Nights is no exception.
A few essentials make the night so much easier. Phone, wallet, and ID are obvious – especially if you plan on ordering a spooky cocktail or two.
A portable charger is a must.
Hair ties if you’ve got longer hair, earplugs if you have sound sensitivities (like me), and sunglasses if you need a little separation from the scary monsters in the mazes.
Yes, I’ve do this. Yes, it helps.
I also always toss in hand sanitizer, a mini deodorant (because you will be sweating), and some Advil and stomach medicine.
Trust me, the late-night snacks at Horror Nights can get pretty random.
All of this fits perfectly in a small bag – crossbody or belt bag size. Nothing too big. Keep it light, keep it simple, and you’re good to go.
What is the Dress Code for Halloween Horror Nights?
Universal has a pretty clear dress code for Halloween Horror Nights. The main rule? You can’t show up looking like one of their scare actors.
Costumes, masks, and anything that covers your face are not allowed. Same goes for uniforms or accessories that make it look like you work for Universal or as emergency personnel.
You do need to be fully clothed (shirt, pants/shorts, and shoes required). No overly revealing, gory, or gruesome outfits either – Universal keeps the event family-friendly, even with all the scares.
Face paint is allowed, but only if it covers half your face or less. And it has to be applied vertically, not full coverage. No prosthetic makeup or anything that conceals your eyes, nose, or mouth. Basically, keep it fun and light but not over the top.
Oversized costumes, veils, long trains, or anything that could trip you – or someone else – aren’t permitted.
Same goes for balloons, smoke machines, sound effects, or props that look like weapons. If it could be mistaken for something dangerous, it won’t make it through security.
Universal can ask you to change or remove items if they don’t meet the guidelines. And if you show up in something that could confuse guests into thinking you’re part of the HHN cast, they’ll turn you away.
So – wear something themed, fun, and comfortable, but keep it safe, simple, and within the rules. That way, you’ll spend the night running through mazes instead of running back to your car to change.
What is Not Allowed at Halloween Horror Nights?
Costumes, masks, and full-face paint are not allowed for guests. Same goes for anything that looks like a weapon – even if it’s just a prop.
Universal wants everyone to feel safe, and no one should mistake you for one of the actors.
Oversized bags are also a no. Stick to a small backpack, crossbody, or belt bag that fits Universal’s bag policy. Smaller is better – you don’t want to waste time juggling lockers or getting slowed down in a scare zone.
You also can’t bring in any opened drinks. Reusable water bottles have to be empty when you arrive, and anything you bring must be factory sealed.
Universal checks carefully for people trying to sneak in alcohol or smoking items, so it’s best not to pack anything questionable.
And of course, don’t bring anything sharp or unsafe that could interfere with your night. Keep it simple, keep it light, and you’ll sail through security and head straight into the scares.
What We Wore to Halloween Horror Nights
This year’s theme was – The Purge: Election year.
At least for Sister and myself. Cousin was Purge themed and then she changed it up a few days before.
The boys, unfortunately, did not join in on the fun this year. But next year we will be requiring participation hahaha
As much as I love the Purge movies, I chose this theme for a bit more personal reasons. Like, my shirt says “No Kings”. And I mean it.
I’m here for everyone, and I believe everyone has the right to feel safe and loved and have the same rights.
Soooo of course I had to get a little snippy with my outfit this year.
I also made bracelets for the occasion – and we finally found people to trade with!!
That was so fun and magical!! I’m always excited when people want to trade bracelets!
We all ordered most of our outfit pieces from Amazon and mixed them up with items we already had.
Cousin purchased the cutest red sequin shorts for her outfit and she also ordered a green pair that she’s going to wear for the holidays!
She picked up the Art the Clown sunglasses from Horror Nights but they do sell them online too. And her cute sequin devil horns and Misfits shirt were also from Amazon.
My sister found the PERFECT Purge: Election Year shirt on Amazon that went great with her tights and boots. And her Statue of Liberty crown was even from the movie too!!
I found my American Flag sequin shorts on Amazon and my sparkly tights too. I found the stickers for my shirt at Michaels craft store and also the ribbon for my hair.
We all wore comfortable shoes because we’ve learned from years passed that ‘comfort is always key’ at Horror Nights.
We had so much fun with our theme and I can’t wait to plan our fits for next year!!
