SeaWorld San Diego has been making a ton of updates lately, from refreshed exhibits to new animal encounters.
It’s been exciting to watch the park continue to invest in the marine life and the overall guest experience.
Part of these upgrades at the park include a full reimagining of Shark Encounter, and the exhibit will have its grand re-opening in 2026.
Let’s get into all the details!
Shark Encounter Gets A New Look
The updated exhibit is going way beyond a simple facelift. SeaWorld is adding new shark species, more marine life, and updated displays that make the whole space feel like an underwater adventure.
You’ll be able to see 11 different shark species, including:
- Sand tiger sharks
- Blacktip reef sharks
- Endangered Australian leopard sharks (part of a Species Survival Plan!)
Most of the sharks showcased are vulnerable or near threatened in the wild, so this refresh is also a reminder of how important conservation efforts are.
A New Approach: Less Scary, More “Wow”
One of the coolest parts? SeaWorld is shifting the vibe from “scary shark” to “sharks are incredible and misunderstood.”
The new encounter highlights their different shapes, sizes, personalities, and adaptations – basically, all the things that make sharks so essential to our oceans.
As someone who loves a good learning moment (especially with animals!), I’m excited for this.
Immersive Features You’ll Want to Stay and Stare At
The redesign is packed with upgraded visuals and storytelling moments. SeaWorld is adding:
- A video ceiling with sharks swimming overhead
- A refreshed underwater tunnel
- A multi-screen finale showing rare, beautiful shark footage in an 8-minute presentation
A New VIP Shark Tour
If you’re like me and always want the behind-the-scenes version of everything – you’re going to love this!
SeaWorld is introducing an exclusive VIP Shark Tour, where you’ll learn how their zoological team cares for and feeds the sharks. The tour also includes access to a brand-new walkway above the shark habitat for those dramatic top-down views.
Details aren’t out yet, but I’m already planning on signing up.
Annual Passholders Get First Access
If you’re a SeaWorld Pass Member, you’ll be among the first to experience the updated Shark Encounter before it officially opens. Passholders also get perks like free parking, guest tickets, and discounts – so if you’re local, it might be worth checking out.
Visiting SeaWorld
I’m really excited for this refresh. Parts of the park are definitely older, and these kinds of updates make such a big difference – not just for the atmosphere and guest experience, but for the marine life too.
SeaWorld puts a lot of effort into marine conservation and education, and immersive experiences like this are honestly the best way to help people learn and connect with these species. I can’t wait to visit again once it opens.
