Living in San Diego has completely changed my perspective on “third spaces” – on being outdoors, on community, and on what it means to feel connected to where you live.
I’m originally from LA, and I’ve lived in a few different cities around there. Most weren’t exactly community-driven. You drive everywhere, trails take hours to reach because of traffic, and just being part of something takes effort. That’s why so many places in LA end up being “paid” spaces – restaurants, gyms, and events that cost money just to feel social.
But San Diego is different. It’s a city built around being outside. It feels open and welcoming, with so many spaces that invite you to gather, walk, explore, or just exist. It’s genuinely community-oriented, and that’s something I really appreciate after coming from LA.
So today, I want to share some of my favorite third spaces in San Diego – the places that make this city feel like home. These are the spots that bring people together, create connection, and remind you how good it feels to just be part of a community.
Welcome!
What is a Third Space?
A third space is that spot that’s separate from your home and your work. It’s where you go to be.
It’s a place to gather, connect, and exist outside of daily responsibilities. Somewhere you can see familiar faces, meet friends, or just be around people. It could be a park, a café, a library, a local beach – anywhere that gives you a sense of community and belonging.
Third spaces remind us that life happens between the lines of “home” and “work.”
The Loss of Third Spaces
We don’t have as many of these places anymore. At least, not free ones.
It feels like every space to just be now comes with a cost. You can’t sit in a café too long without buying something. Community centers have closed. Pools that were once free now charge for entry or are overcrowded. And sometimes, that easy sense of community just… disappears.
My personal third space is Disneyland. It’s relaxed, it feels safe, there’s food, shopping, entertainment – everything in one place. I have a pass with my cousin and friends, and it’s become our go-to space to unwind. It’s our spot.
I know Disneyland isn’t free. It’s actually the opposite – it’s extremely expensive. But for us, it’s a place that offers comfort and connection, especially when those types of spaces are becoming harder to find. (Which is why we pay and I want to find more free spaces.)
Access is part of the problem. So many third spaces now come with a price tag, and that limits who gets to enjoy them.
Why Third Spaces Matter
Everyone deserves access to places that feel safe and welcoming.
Places to build community.
Places to move, relax, and recharge.
Third spaces shouldn’t be exclusive to those who can afford them. They should exist for everyone.
They’re important for mental health, for connection, for feeling like you belong somewhere. And whether it’s a park, a library, or a beach – having somewhere you can go without expectations or entry fees makes a difference.
Third Spaces in San Diego
If you’re in San Diego, we’re lucky to have plenty of spots that can fill that third space role – some free, some not, but all worth exploring.
Here are a few of my favorites:
- The Beaches – Endless coastline and free to visit. Bring a blanket, walk the shore, or just sit and breathe.
- Balboa Park – Gardens, museums, street performers, open spaces. It’s the heart of San Diego’s community life.
- Local Coffee Shops – We have so many good ones. I love that buzz of quiet conversation and people working or catching up.
- Torrey Pines – A place to hike, think, or clear your head with that ocean view.
- Batiquitos Lagoon – A calm walking trail surrounded by nature. Perfect for decompressing.
- Liberty Station – Great food, open courtyards, art, and events. Easy to spend hours there.
- UTC Mall in La Jolla – Sounds funny, but it’s become a hangout space – open-air, nice restaurants, safe, clean, with lots of places to sit.
- Bookstores – From indie spots to Barnes & Noble, sometimes wandering through aisles of books is exactly what you need.
- Barrio Logan – Art, food, community, and culture all in one neighborhood.
- The Village in Carlsbad – Walkable, cozy, and full of character. Grab a coffee, shop a little, and enjoy the vibe.

Third spaces keep us connected. They remind us that community still exists beyond screens and schedules. Whether yours is a park bench, a favorite café, or even Disneyland (not free lol) – having a place that feels like yours matters.
And here in San Diego, we have plenty of spaces that invite you to slow down, breathe, and just be.
