How to Plan Cute Halloween Outfits for Disneyland
Movie or Character Inspired
The first step to planning any Disneyland outfit is to decide on whether you’re going Movie, Character or even Land inspired. And by ‘Land’, I mean, Fantasyland, Tomorrowland, etc. Dressing as a ‘land’ is so fun!
But seriously, to help make things easier, focus on an overall theme of a Character or Movie or Franchise or Land. (The list keeps growing)
- Movie
- Land in Disney Park
- Character
- Movie Franchise or Studio (Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, Marvel)
Once you have this decided you can then start your research to narrow down your exact outfit inspiration.
Research
Now that you’ve decided on your character or movie, it’s time to dive into research. For this, I love to go on Pinterest or Google Images to check what creative ideas could inspire my outfit. Sometimes you see the way someone styled an accessory or did their makeup and it can drive your inspiration too.
For DIY projects, I love to go on TikTok and YouTube for tutorials and then of course to see outfit videos.
Get Creative
This tip is to get you to think outside the box. I know it may not seem helpful right upfront as you’re planning but letting your creativity take the lead can make your day that much more magical.
I’m personally a big fan of when people DIY their outfits or put a new spin on an old classic. I love mashups of characters or turning a character into a Halloween version or even mixing genres.
Layering
Because Halloween time and Fall bring a bit of a chill in the air, it’s important to add some layers to your outfit. It’s a nice touch if your layers are part of your costume or outfit, so they add to the overall look, instead of simply looking like a sweatshirt on top of your cute dress.
Don’t let the layers distract you. They can add texture or even be part of the story of your outfit, like adding a cape or a long coat. Part of the fun of dressing up is building the character, creating a story and an experience.
Mix and Match
Staying along the lines of ‘layering’ is mixing patterns and textures. This look is especially good when you’re doing spooky costumes or outfits. Adding Different tights or stockings and socks adds dimension, color, and texture to whatever you’re wearing.
Mixing bold prints and patterns adds character and life to your look and is great for that added detail. Don’t be afraid to get out of your comfort zone. It’s Disneyland, it’s magical, it’s happy and you deserve to have fun!
Small Details
The Devil is in the details. Create those little accessories that only you would appreciate. This can look like custom rings, bracelets, or even hair accessories. Add extras like keychains, tassels; tiny things that complete the look or add to the story.
I once made hair clips from tiny Eel toys for an Ursula Disneybound. They were little Flotsam and Jetsam clips and it completely added that extra touch to finish the outfit. It’s something that isn’t really necessary but is appreciated by people in love with the character.
Accessorize
Along with the smaller details are the obvious accessories. Personally, I love bracelets, earrings, and bags that match the character or movie. For Halloween, this can look like Oogie Boogie Earrings, a Pumpkin Mickey Purse, or Sanderson Sister bracelets.
Accessories can take your look from basic to fabulous and it doesn’t have to be expensive. DIY some items to make your look unique.
The added pieces will add life and movement to your outfit and will make the final look more polished and cohesive.
Color Scheme
Sometimes choosing a character or movie isn’t as fun as simply dressing up in Halloween attire. I’ve often just worn all of my Halloween merchandise at once and made that the theme of my outfit.
Choosing a color scheme is another great way to simplify the planning process while also looking cute.
You can go for an all-black look and be inspired by bats or do an all-black Mickey Mouse outfit, do a fun all-black Haunted Mansion outfit, or even an all-black princess outfit. The crazier idea, the better!
OR let the colors guide you and do a pastel-themed Halloween look. Pastel Halloween is super cute and always popular. Wear your favorite pastel outfit and add some light-colored ears and a pink pumpkin bag and you’re set!
Group Costumes or Outfits
Personally, I’m always asking my besties to match with me and do group costumes because I think they are always 10/10 fantastic.
Planning a group costume our outfit theme is iconic and so fun for photos.
A few ideas for great group Disney Halloween costumes are:
- Zenon: Girl from the 21st Century
- Toy Story Characters
- All Princesses
- All Villains
- Haunted Mansion Ghost Characters
- Mickey and Friends
- Loki’s – All the Lokis from the Show 🙂
- Star Wars Characters
DIY or Buy
A lot of popular outfits and costumes are handmade each year for Halloween and they never disappoint. Even if you don’t fancy yourself a sewer, you can still create a lot of great DIY pieces from thrifted items.
There are a lot of easy upcycle projects you can find on TikTok, YouTube and Pinterest. Once you have your outfit theme decided, look into DIY projects for it. That project might just inspire you to create something magical and memorable for your trip.
Simple DIY projects that I make for my Disney outfits are typically earrings and bracelets.
I also make my own dresses too but I only recommend it if you have time and access to the right materials. You don’t NEED to make your own clothes for Disney, it’s just added fun.
Buying new tops, jackets, or accessories for your outfit is always an option too but it can get pricey, especially if you’re planning on visiting Disneyland for more than one day.
Try reworking some older pieces in your closet or to a swap with your friends.
Conclusion
Remember, the key to a cute Halloween outfit at Disneyland is to have fun and let your creativity shine. Enjoy the experience of dressing up and immersing yourself in the magic and churros. Don’t let the costume or outfit determine how much fun you have or how many pictures you take. Every photo you take when you’re having a good time is a good photo.
