Quick Overview: What Bristol Is Like

Bristol is a very walkable city, which makes it perfect for a short trip.
Most of the major attractions are close together, there are tons of coffee shops and restaurants, and the city has a big student population that gives it a fun energy. It also has a really strong art scene, especially if you’re into street art and Banksy.
It’s also a great option for a weekend trip from London since it’s only about a 1.5-hour train ride, which makes it very easy.
We stayed here when my husband was traveling for work, so I basically did this weekend in Bristol solo, and it was great.
It was easy to navigate, felt very safe, and since so much of it is walkable, it made exploring really easy. The bus system also seemed great, but I mostly just walked everywhere.
Where to Stay in Bristol

We stayed at the Bristol Marriott Royal Hotel, and I absolutely loved it.
It’s in such a good location, which made it easy to walk everywhere I wanted to go. If you’re only in Bristol for a few days, staying somewhere central makes a huge difference.
The hotel is right next door to the Bristol Cathedral and close to a bunch of restaurants and coffee shops, so it felt like a really easy home base.
The hotel itself felt like an old castle, but obviously updated, hahaha. It had a great atmosphere, the lobby bar had fantastic drinks, and our room was spacious with a beautiful view of the cathedral garden.
Day 1: Explore the City, Bristol Aquarium, and Bristol Cathedral
The best way to start your time in Bristol is just by getting a feel for the city.
I spent most of my first day exploring on foot, which ended up being how I experienced most of Bristol. I walked so much. But that’s part of what made it so nice.
I wanted to jump right in, so I went on TikTok, saw people saying I had to visit the aquarium and the cathedral, and decided that was my plan. Very scientific, hahaha.
Honestly, it worked out perfectly because they were both so close to the hotel. The cathedral was literally outside our bedroom window, and the Bristol Aquarium was just across the street.
Walk the City and Stop for Coffee

Bristol is one of those cities where you can just wander and find something interesting around every corner.
There are lots of coffee shops, small stores, and pretty streets to walk through, so I definitely recommend keeping your first day a little flexible and giving yourself time to just explore.
Visit the Bristol Aquarium

I visited the Bristol Aquarium, which was a fun and easy thing to add to the itinerary.
It’s a pretty small aquarium, so I got through it fairly quickly, but it was still nice to see and would be especially great if you’re visiting Bristol with kids or just want an easy indoor activity. It’s also a good option if the weather isn’t great.
Visit Bristol Cathedral

Next, I stopped by Bristol Cathedral, which was absolutely stunning.
I actually went back to the hotel room for a bit first to hydrate and grab a snack before walking over, and then I spent a good amount of time there because I love cathedrals. This one was truly breathtaking.
They do ask for a donation when you enter. I gave £5 and also picked up a few things from the gift shop for myself and some family members.
Dinner at Nutmeg Indian Street Kitchen

For dinner, I took myself out to Nutmeg Indian Street Kitchen, and it was so good.
Honestly, I liked it even more than Dishoom. It tasted more homemade, really flavorful, and just overall felt like such a great meal.
I brought my book with me and turned it into a full solo dinner moment, which was absolutely perfect.
Day 2: Culture, Walking, Shopping, and a Banksy Tour
Day two was more about wandering, taking my time, and seeing more of the city at a slower pace.
Take a Self-Guided Banksy Walking Tour

One of my favorite things I did in Bristol was take myself on a self-guided Banksy walking tour.
Since Bristol is known as Banksy’s hometown, there are several pieces of his work around the city, and it’s such a fun way to explore. I had absolutely no idea before visiting that there was so much Banksy art there, so that ended up being a really fun surprise.
Most of the pieces were fairly close together, but there were a couple that were farther across town, and I ended up seeing those later on another walk.
If you’re planning 3 days in Bristol, I definitely think this is one of the more fun and unique things to do.
Coffee and Slow Exploring

I drank a lot more coffee this day. Probably more than I should have. And I bought more pastries too, because I love buying pastries on vacation. Hahaha.
Bristol is such a good city for that kind of slower travel day where you’re not rushing around. You can just wander, stop somewhere cozy, grab a drink, and keep going.
Dinner at Moltobueno

For dinner, I took myself out to Moltobueno, an Italian restaurant a couple blocks uphill from the hotel, and it was another really good meal.
This time I read my book on my phone and really took my time ordering way too much food. And yes, they talked me into dessert. Not that it was exactly difficult, hahaha.
Another cozy and beautiful restaurant, and the staff were lovely. It was a very small and intimate restaurant. A perfect spot for a slow dinner.
Day 3: Final Exploring and Thrifting in Bristol
For your last day in Bristol, I think it makes sense to keep things a little more open and use the time to revisit areas you liked or explore anything you missed.
Go Thrifting in Bristol

On my first day, I had spotted a bunch of thrift shops, so I decided that would be my adventure for day three.
I visited four thrift shops and turned it into its own little outing. It ended up being another great way to see more of the city, and I even spotted two more Banksy pieces on my way.
If you like vintage shopping or just want a more relaxed final day, this was such a fun way to spend it.
You could also use this day for more coffee stops, more wandering, or heading back to a neighborhood you liked the most.
Final Thoughts on Visiting Bristol
I absolutely loved visiting Bristol and would 100% recommend it for a weekend trip.
It’s easy to get to, easy to get around, and has such a good mix of things to do; from art and history to food and just wandering the city.
If you’re looking for something a little different from London, Bristol is such a good option. It feels fun, creative, and easy in a way that makes it a really enjoyable city to spend a few days in.
XOXO,
Julia
