Thinking about attending a Meet Cute Romance Bookshop author event? Here’s what my first book release party was like, what to expect, tips for first-timers, and why I already bought tickets to two more.
One of my goals this year has been to get out of the house more.
Join clubs. Go to events.
Say yes to things that sound fun.
As someone who spends a lot of time reading, writing, and happily hiding away with a good fantasy book, I realized I wanted to start finding more ways to meet other readers and become part of the local book community.
That’s exactly how I ended up buying a ticket to my very first Meet Cute Romance Bookshop author event.
If you’ve been curious about attending one of Meet Cute Romance Bookshop’s author events but aren’t sure what to expect, here’s everything I learned from my very first book release party.

About Meet Cute Romance Bookshop

I actually discovered Meet Cute Romance Bookshop during the San Diego Book Crawl.
I completely fell in love with the shop.
It’s a small independent bookstore in La Mesa that focuses entirely on romance books, but what really stood out to me was the community they’ve built.
They host author signings, release parties, writing nights, book clubs, and all kinds of events that bring readers together.
Because the bookstore itself is fairly small, many of the larger author events are held at bigger venues around San Diego.
For this event, everyone gathered at Liberty Station.
Event Details

Author: Christina Lauren
Book: The Romance Revival
Location: Vesper at Liberty Station
Address:
2875 Dewey Road
San Diego, CA
Doors Opened: 6:00 PM
Event Started: 7:00 PM
Parking: Free parking is available throughout Liberty Station.
My ticket was around $45 and included admission plus a signed copy of The Romance Revival, which I thought was a really great value.
Why I Decided to Go to Meet Cute Romance Bookshop Book Party
I’m trying to do more fun things after work.
More community events.
More hobbies.
More nights that don’t involve me sitting on my couch reading by myself…
Although I still love those nights too.
A romance book release party felt exactly like my kind of event.
I invited my bestie Carmen because we’re constantly sending each other voice notes about whatever romance or fantasy book we’re currently obsessed with.
This felt like the perfect girls’ night.
What Happens at a Meet Cute Author Event?

I had absolutely no idea what to expect.
We arrived around 5:30 PM, even though doors didn’t open until 6:00.
From outside it already looked busy.
Once everyone was inside, though, the venue was much bigger than it appeared.
It eventually filled up with readers, and the energy in the room was incredible.
The very first thing we did was grab seats near the front before heading over to the merch tables.
Pro tip…
Secure your seats first.
Then shop.
That strategy worked perfectly.
Besides receiving our signed copy of The Romance Revival, we both ended up buying another book and, naturally, Meet Cute t-shirts.
Because apparently I collect bookstore merchandise now.
Meeting Christina Lauren

One of my favorite moments of the evening was learning more about Christina Lauren themselves.
If you didn’t know…
Christina Lauren is actually two people.
Christina and Lauren met while waiting in line for a Twilight panel at Comic-Con.
That has to be one of the greatest friendship origin stories ever.
It also made me laugh because my best friend and I were heading to Comic-Con the very next day to see them again during a romance panel.
Small world.
The Best Part of the Night

The event wasn’t just an author interview.
It felt like hanging out with a room full of people who genuinely love books.
Christina Lauren talked about writing The Romance Revival, answered audience questions, played games with everyone, and gave away lots of prizes throughout the evening.
There was so much laughter.
The whole event felt relaxed, welcoming, and genuinely fun.
That’s what surprised me the most.
I expected it to feel more formal.
Instead it felt like a giant room full of friends talking about books.
And I’m probably biased, but romance and fantasy readers are just the best.
We’re there to have fun. We’re ready to laugh.
We’re excited to talk about fictional characters like they’re real people.
And yes…
Sometimes we’re just excited to talk about the smut we love.
Read more smut.
Hahaha.
Can You Go Alone to a Book Release Party?
Absolutely.
I didn’t attend this event alone, but I do a lot of things solo.
And I noticed quite a few people attending alone. The events are usually during the week, so a lot of people are coming straight from work.
People chatted with the readers sitting next to them, joined in on the games, and looked like they were having an amazing time.
Please don’t let going alone stop you.
Some of my favorite experiences have happened because I decided to go anyway.
Tips for Your First Meet Cute Author Event

As your resident Vacation Prepper, here are a few things I’d recommend:
Arrive Early
The best seats go quickly.
Getting there about 30 minutes before doors open gave us plenty of time to settle in.
Save Your Seat Before Shopping
Use your sweater or bag to hold your spot, then head over to browse the books and merchandise.
Bring Water
Book events are exciting…
But I’m still going to tell you to stay hydrated.
Pack a Snack
You know me.
There’s always a purse snack.
Always.
Buy the Merch
Support your local independent bookstore if you can.
The Meet Cute shirts were adorable.
Talk to Other Readers
Everyone is there because they love books.
It’s one of the easiest places to strike up a conversation.
Start a convo about what y’all are currently reading or your theories on fun fantasy books.
Swap Instagrams. Make some friends!
Is a Meet Cute Author Event Worth It?
Absolutely.
Whether you’ve read every book by the author or you’re simply looking for a fun night surrounded by fellow readers, I think these events are completely worth it.
I walked away with signed books, a few new purchases, lots of laughs, and even more excitement for the next event.
Which is perfect because I already have two more Meet Cute events on my calendar.

Going to a Meet Cute Bookshop Event
I have a feeling this was only the beginning.
Now I completely understand why people keep coming back.
There’s something really special about spending an evening surrounded by people who love stories as much as you do.
You leave with a signed book, a few new recommendations, and a reminder that reading doesn’t have to be a solo hobby.
I’m already counting down to my next Meet Cute event.
Hope to see you at the next one!
XOXO,
Julia
