#1 Hocus Pocus (1993)
No list of Halloween movies would be complete without mentioning the iconic “Hocus Pocus.” This cult classic, released in 1993, has become a staple of Halloween traditions. My sister and I quote this movie more than we care to mention. It’s a classic for a reason and an annual tradition.
Follow the misadventures of the Sanderson sisters, three witch sisters resurrected in modern-day Salem. With a perfect blend of comedy, magic, and a touch of nostalgia, this film will transport you to a world where witches roam and hilarity ensues.
#2 The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
For those who love the delightful blend of Halloween and Christmas, “The Nightmare Before Christmas” is a must-watch. Directed by Tim Burton, this stop-motion animated masterpiece takes you on a whimsical journey to Halloween Town, where Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King, stumbles upon Christmas Town and decides to put his own twist on the holiday.
And if you love this movie then you have to visit Disneyland during the holidays to experience the Nightmare Before Christmas makeover on the Haunted Mansion ride. It’s the most wonderful experience and truly is something to remember forever and a Halloween staple for us.
#3 Edward Scissorhands (1990)
“Edward Scissorhands” is a dark fantasy film directed by Tim Burton. I love the feeling of a dark fantasy and this movie definitely that. Edward Scissorhands can’t be beaten, it’s a classic movie about acceptance and love and has the best costuming, and is so campy. This is a fantastic movie and I’m so happy it’s available to watch on Disney Plus to watch all year long but especially during Halloween time.
#4 The Haunted Mansion (2003)
This beloved Disneyland attraction came to life on the big screen with “The Haunted Mansion” movie in 2003. Let’s not get it confused with the Haunted Mansion movie that’s coming out this year in 2023.
The original features the hilarious Eddie Murphy as he embarks on living in the eerie house and of course, hilarity ensues. This movie is cute and fun-spooky and is perfect for having on while throwing a Halloween cookie-decorating party. It’s a fun watch and makes me miss Disneyland so much!
#5 Frankenweenie (2012)
“Frankenweenie” is another adorable stop-motion animated film directed by Tim Burton. This cute and quirky tale follows the story of young Victor Frankenstein, a budding scientist and aspiring filmmaker. When Victor’s beloved dog Sparky unexpectedly passes away, he becomes determined to bring him back to life through a daring scientific experiment. As Sparky is resurrected, Victor must keep his creation a secret while navigating the challenges of school, friends, and a town that doesn’t understand his unconventional methods. With its stunning black-and-white visuals, heartfelt storytelling, and Burton’s signature gothic style, “Frankenweenie” is a charming and poignant tribute to the power of love, friendship, and the enduring bond between a boy and his dog.
#6 Halloweentown (1998)
Another iconic Halloween movie that basically defined a generation. Halloweentown is the QUEEN of Halloween for me. I remember imagining how amazing it would be if I was a witch and had magical powers and came from a magical family!
It gives me the same feeling as the first time I read Harry Potter as a kid. This movie is truly wonderful and I love the sequel just as much.
The story revolves around Marnie Piper, a young girl who discovers that she comes from a family of witches. On her 13th birthday, Marnie learns of a secret place called Halloweentown, a whimsical realm where supernatural beings live. Determined to embrace her magical heritage, Marnie convinces her skeptical family to visit Halloweentown. However, they soon discover that an evil force threatens to destroy both Halloweentown and the human world. With the help of her eccentric grandmother Aggie and her newfound powers, Marnie must uncover the truth and save both realms from impending doom.
#7 Under Wraps (1997)
Another brilliant Disney Channel Original Movie that will last forever. I loved watching this every year on the Disney Channel and now I’m still in love.
The story revolves around three friends, Marshall, Gilbert, and Amy, who stumble upon a mysterious Egyptian mummy named Harold. Little do they know that Harold comes to life and becomes their unexpected and endearing companion. As they embark on a quest to help Harold find his missing amulet before Halloween ends, the trio encounters hilarious mishaps, valuable life lessons, and, ultimately, the true meaning of friendship. With its mix of humor, adventure, and heartfelt moments, “Under Wraps” is a beloved family-friendly film that has become a Halloween classic for Disney fans of all ages.
#8 Coco (2017)
Although not traditionally considered a Halloween movie, “Coco” beautifully captures the spirit of the Day of the Dead, making it a perfect choice for this time of year.
This is truly one of the best movies Disney and Pixar have ever made. It’s magical and beautifully made and has all the right family moments that will have you in tears. Plus the soundtrack is unbeatable!
#9 Don’t Look Under the Bed (1999)
A truly terrifying Disney Channel Original Movie that had me sleeping with the lights on for way too long. I know this movie is supposed to be for kids but it’s just scary. It’s even labeled as “Horror/Fantasy”. Why is it labeled horror?!
But it’s a great movie for Halloween season for a few spooks and a lot of extra cheese. The costumes are wonderful and it’s such a good story at the end. Please watch!
#10 Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949)
“Ichabod and Mr. Toad” is a classic Disney film that combines two enchanting stories based on popular literary works. The first part of the movie follows Mr. Toad, an eccentric and impulsive character who becomes obsessed with motorcars and falls into a series of misadventures. The second part delves into the tale of Ichabod Crane, a lanky and superstitious schoolteacher who encounters the legendary Headless Horseman in Sleepy Hollow.
If you’ve been on Mr. Toads Wild Ride at Disneyland and found yourself very confused, this movie will help clear things up for you a bit.
These are just a few examples of the bewitching movies that await you on Disney Plus.
