Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood Tips for First Timers
If you’re thinking about going to Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood this year, read this guide first.
Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood is one of the biggest Halloween events in California and, in my opinion, one of the best theme park events of the entire year.
For years and years, I avoided going to Halloween Horror Nights.
I was scarred as a kid after going through one of Universal’s year-round haunted attractions. It was the Van Helsing maze, actually. And when I say I was terrified, I mean TERRIFIED.
Like, on the floor, crying, terrified.
A security guard had to come help me out.
I was probably 12 years old and fully convinced I would never go back.
Fast forward about 15 years and somehow Halloween Horror Nights became one of my favorite events of the year.
Now I’m addicted.
I need the Frequent Fear Pass.
I need more HHN.
I still scream through every maze, but now that’s part of the fun.
The reality is that Halloween Horror Nights can feel overwhelming for first-time visitors. There are haunted houses, scare zones, rides, food booths, merchandise, fog everywhere, loud music, chainsaws, monsters jumping out at you, and thousands of people trying to experience it all in one night.
It’s a lot.
But that’s also why it’s so much fun.
If you’re planning your first visit to Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood, this guide covers everything I wish I had known before my first trip.

What Is Halloween Horror Nights?

Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood is a separately ticketed Halloween event that takes place on select nights throughout the fall season.
If you’ve never been before, imagine Universal Studios transformed into one giant horror movie.
There are haunted houses, scare zones, monsters hiding in the fog, themed food, specialty merchandise, live entertainment, and some of the most impressive sets you’ll find at any Halloween event.
One of the things that makes Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood so special is that this is Universal’s home turf. You’re walking through the same park where movies are made and where some of horror’s most iconic stories come to life.
Every year, Universal creates a mix of original haunted houses and houses based on popular horror movies, television shows, and characters. Past themes have included Michael Myers, The Exorcist, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Killer Klowns from Outer Space, and more.
And of course, Hollywood gets the Terror Tram.
If you’ve never experienced the Terror Tram before, you’re in for a treat. It’s one of the most unique attractions at Halloween Horror Nights and something that makes the Hollywood event different from Orlando.
There are also scare zones throughout the park filled with actors in movie-quality makeup and costumes. Sometimes they’re just standing there looking creepy. Sometimes they’re chasing your friend who swore they weren’t scared.
It’s a full event.
How Many Haunted Houses Are at Halloween Horror Nights?
The exact number changes every year, but guests can usually expect:
- 8 to 10 haunted houses
- Multiple scare zones
- Terror Tram
- Live entertainment
- Themed food and drinks
- Specialty merchandise
- Most major rides are operating during the event
Honestly, that’s part of what makes Halloween Horror Nights so difficult to plan.
There is SO much to do and so little time.
That’s why having a strategy is important.
Is Halloween Horror Nights Worth It?

Yes.
Absolutely.
Now, whether you buy General Admission, Express Pass, or go all out with a RIP Tour is completely up to you, but the event itself is almost always worth experiencing.
We’ve gone multiple years now and every single year we leave talking about our favorite scares, favorite houses, and all the food we didn’t have time to try.
The production value is incredible.
Universal doesn’t do haunted houses halfway.
The sets feel like movie sets. The costumes are amazing. The sound design is incredible. The makeup artists deserve awards.
Is it expensive?
Yep.
Is it crowded?
Also yes.
Can some lines get ridiculously long?
Unfortunately, yes.
But if you’re a horror fan, or even just horror-curious, it’s one of the most unique theme park events you’ll experience all year.
How Scary Is Halloween Horror Nights?
If you had asked me this question 10 years ago, I would have told you Halloween Horror Nights was the scariest event in the world.
Now?
It’s one of my favorite events in the world.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s still scary.
There are jump scares.
There are loud noises.
There are dark hallways.
There is fog everywhere.
There are chainsaws.
There are monsters popping out of places you swear were empty two seconds ago.
But that’s also the fun of it.
One thing first-time visitors should know is that the scare actors cannot touch you.
They cannot grab you.
They cannot separate you from your group.
They cannot drag you away into the darkness.
Halloween Horror Nights is a highly organized event with security, emergency exits, and clear pathways throughout the haunted houses.
If loud sounds are a challenge for you, bring earplugs.
Seriously.
I wear earplugs through most of the mazes.
It helps so much.
Personally, I walk through every maze with sunglasses on, earplugs in, and screaming my head off before anyone even scares me.
I just bust through.
Hahaha.
If you’re nervous, start with one haunted house.
If you hate it, that’s okay.
Go ride Jurassic World.
Go get food.
Go watch the scare actors from a distance.
There’s plenty to enjoy even if you decide haunted houses aren’t your thing.
Is Halloween Horror Nights Good for Non-Horror Fans?

Honestly?
Yes.
And I feel like I’m a great example of that.
I spent years avoiding HHN because I was terrified.
Now I count down the days until opening night.
The nice thing about Halloween Horror Nights is that not every area of the park is designed to scare you.
The scare zones are clearly marked.
Most rides stay open.
There are themed foods and specialty drinks.
And the atmosphere is genuinely fun.
Even if you’re not a horror fan, you may be surprised by how much you enjoy simply being there.
Halloween Horror Nights Tickets Explained

Universal’s premium guided tour experience.
I’ve never personally done the RIP Tour, so I can’t speak from experience, but it includes priority access, guided experiences, and additional perks.
Which Halloween Horror Nights Ticket Is Best?

General Admission

- Guests wanting to see the most houses possible
RIP Tour

Best Time to Arrive at HHN
One of the biggest mistakes first-timers make is arriving late.
Halloween Horror Nights officially starts in the evening, but your night really begins much earlier.
Plan to arrive before security lines build.
If you want to catch the opening ceremony, you will need to get to the front gates before 7 PM.
Give yourself enough time to park, walk to the entrance, pass through security, and get situated.
If Early Access is available, take advantage of it.
Those extra minutes can save you hours later in the night.
Another major tip?
Stay until closing.
Many guests leave around midnight, which often means wait times drop during the final hours.
How to Maximize Your Time at HHN

Head to the Back of the Park First
Most guests stop at the first house they see.
Don’t.
Go directly to the attractions furthest from the entrance.
Use the Universal App Constantly
Monitor wait times throughout the night.
Wait times can change quickly.
Pick Three Non-Negotiables
Before arriving, identify your top three must-do attractions.
If everything else falls apart, you’ll still leave happy.
Save Shopping for the End
Merchandise stores will still be there later.
Short wait times won’t.
Don’t Spend Prime Hours Eating
I love HHN food, but I don’t want to spend 45 minutes waiting in line at 8 PM.
Focus on houses early and save food breaks for later.
Should You Buy Express Pass?
Our group buys Express Pass every year.
Every single year we complain about the price.
And every single year we’re grateful we bought it.
The biggest benefit is reducing stress.
Instead of spending most of the night standing in line, you’re actually experiencing the event.
Typical Express waits are often between 10 and 20 minutes, though this varies.
Meanwhile, standby waits can easily exceed two hours for popular houses.
If you’re visiting once per season, I think Express Pass is often worth considering.
If you’re buying a Frequent Fear Pass and planning multiple visits, General Admission may be the better value.

- Character encounters
- Terror Tram
- Open rides
The atmosphere is part of what makes HHN special.
Slow down occasionally and enjoy it.
Mistakes First Timers Make at Halloween Horror Nights

Getting there late immediately puts you behind.
Wearing Bad Shoes
You will walk miles.
Wear comfortable footwear.
Not Drinking Enough Water

Spending Too Much Time Shopping Early
The houses should come first.
Forgetting to Eat
Grab dinner before the event or schedule a food break.

- Wear earplugs.

- Accept that you’re probably going to scream.
And honestly?
That’s part of the fun.
I still get nervous walking into new houses.
I still scream.

And I still buy tickets every year.
