A behind-the-scenes look at how I’m prepping for my 3-night Disney Halloween cruise, from what I’m researching to what I’m already packing (yes, already).
I have a Disney Cruise coming up (Halloween edition), and I am already fully in planning mode.
Not in a stressful way… more like notes app lists, saved TikToks, way too many open tabs, and thinking about outfits months in advance. If you’re anything like me, planning is half the fun of the trip.
This cruise is the 3-Night Halloween on the High Seas Baja Cruise from San Diego, and it’s actually a little different from what I’m used to. It’s short, it’s local for me, and it’s our first time sailing out of San Diego.
So I wanted to share exactly how I’m planning for it; what I’m booking, what I’m researching, and all the random little things I’m thinking about along the way.
Because there are always more details than you expect… even for a 3-night cruise.

Choosing an Inside Stateroom on a Disney Cruise (What I’m Expecting)
We booked a standard inside stateroom, which is a first for us.
I’m not going to lie… I’m a little nervous about it. No windows, no natural light – it’s going to be pitch black in the room. I already know I’ll need to pack some sort of natural light alarm clock or something to help us wake up in the mornings.
But I’m also excited to try it. It feels like a very different experience.
This is also our first cruise out of San Diego, which is funny because I live here. You’d think it would be easier, but it actually feels like there’s more to think about because it’s so different from sailing out of Florida.
The port here is shared with other cruise lines, so it doesn’t have that same fully immersive Disney feel like Port Canaveral. I do think there’s a little extra magic in Florida when you board.
But… I’m also excited to just be cruising out of my own city. No flights, no major logistics, just getting dropped off at the port and starting my Disney vacation.
What I Research Before a Disney Cruise
Even though it’s a short cruise, I still go deep into research mode.
Here’s what I’ve been looking into so far:
- Is there Pirate Night on a 3-night cruise?
- What exactly happens during Halloween on the High Seas?
- Is there a full Halloween party or more subtle theming?
- What the ship looks like (this sailing is on the Disney Wonder)
- Dining options and what’s actually worth it
- Is Palo worth it on a 3-night Disney Cruise?
- Activities onboard and what we should book ahead of time
I’ve also been watching a ton of YouTube videos, reading blog posts, and scrolling Reddit threads to see what people say about this specific itinerary.
Even though it’s “just” a 3-day cruise, I still want to know what to expect.
Planning a Disney Cruise from San Diego (What’s Different from Florida)
Because it’s such a short cruise, I feel like every decision matters a little more.
There’s less time to “figure it out as you go,” so I want to be a bit more intentional with what we book.
For sure:
- We’re booking a mixology class again (we loved it last time)
- I want to book at least one more activity, but I’m still deciding what
We’re also planning to get the spa pass, mainly because we both like to use the gym in the morning and the sauna.
And honestly… the showers in the spa/gym area are so nice. It’s one of those little upgrades that just makes the trip feel better.
👉 If you’re thinking about booking the mixology class, here’s exactly what it’s like on the Disney Fantasy.
What to Do in Ensenada on a Disney Cruise (Still Deciding)
This is something I’m still figuring out.
I’ve been going back and forth between booking a port excursion or just exploring Ensenada on our own.
So right now, I’m doing a lot of research on:
- What’s walkable
- What’s worth doing
- Whether it’s better to stay on the ship
This is definitely still a “TBD” part of the trip.
How I Plan My Disney Cruise Outfits (Day-by-Day Breakdown)
This is where I start having the most fun.
Even though it’s only a 3-night cruise, I still plan outfits day by day based on what we’re doing.
Here’s what I know I want:
Embarkation Outfit
I want something fun and themed to set the tone, probably something Halloween-inspired.
I also want to bring any new Disney Halloween merch I find in the parks before the trip. I’m already thinking:
- A themed tumbler
- A cute bag
- Maybe a sweatshirt or ears
Pirate Night (Maybe?)
I think there’s a Pirate Night… but I’m not 100% sure.
So I’m planning an outfit just in case. I’d rather be prepared than miss out.
Ensenada Outfit
This one is all about:
- Comfortable
- Walkable
- Still cute
And I’m also planning what’s going in my bag for port day, which is a whole separate thing.
Halloween Night Outfit
I don’t think I’m going full costume, but definitely something themed.
I feel like this is the moment to lean into it just a little.
Debarkation Outfit
This depends on our plans.
If we’re going straight home, I want something super comfortable. But if we end up grabbing lunch or doing something in downtown San Diego after, I’ll plan something a little more put together.
Also… October weather in San Diego can be weird. It’s usually a little cloudy, sometimes warm, sometimes not. So I’ll probably plan options.
👉 If you’re planning outfits too, I shared everything I wore on my first Disney Cruise here.
Fun Extras I’m Planning for My Disney Cruise
This is where I get a little extra (in the best way).
Pixie Dusting
Last time, I made bracelets… and then got too nervous to hand them out.
This time, I really want to do it.
So I’m already thinking about what I want to bring and how I’ll actually follow through this time.
Door Decorations
This is a non-negotiable for me.
I love decorating the door, and I’m especially excited to do a Halloween theme this time. It just adds to the whole experience.
Snacks (Of Course)
I love planning snacks. Like… truly love it.
I will plan snacks months in advance and I’m not even sorry about it.
Right now I’m thinking:
- Protein shakes
- Some beer (within the allowed limits)
- Hot Cheetos
- Tony’s chocolate bars
- Jerky or protein snacks
- Movie theater-style candy
Because yes, you can buy snacks on the ship, but I’d rather grab my favorites ahead of time.
Final Thoughts: Planning a Short Disney Cruise (Is It Enough Time?)
Even though this is a short cruise, it still feels like there’s a lot to think about.
I love getting into the details, planning things out, and building the excitement before the trip even starts.
And honestly, sharing this process is part of the fun too!
I’ll definitely be updating this after the cruise with what actually worked, what I’d do differently, and everything we ended up doing.
But for now… the planning continues.
XOXO,
Julia
