Heading to Walt Disney World during the hottest months of the year? Here’s exactly what to pack for Disney World in summer, including cooling essentials, park bag must-haves, outfit tips, and practical items that genuinely make a difference in the Florida heat.
Summer at Walt Disney World is a completely different beast compared to Disneyland in California. The parks are bigger, the humidity is intense, the rainstorms come out of nowhere, and the amount of walking you do every single day is kind of insane.
But honestly? I still love Disney World in the summer.
There’s something really fun about long park days, late-night rides, warm evenings in the parks, and ending the day completely exhausted with sore feet and a million photos on your phone.
The key to actually enjoying it though? Packing correctly.
I’m a BIG Disney vacation prep person. I research everything, overpack a little, and try to think ahead because being overheated, dehydrated, sunburned, or uncomfortable at Disney can make the day feel way longer than it needs to.
So this guide is all about what to actually pack for Disney World in the summer, including cooling essentials, park bag must-haves, outfit ideas, and little things that genuinely make a difference in the Florida heat.

What Summer Weather Is Like at Disney World
Orlando Summer Weather: Heat, Humidity & Afternoon Rainstorms
If you’ve never been to Orlando in the summer before… prepare yourself mentally hahaha.
Summer weather at Disney World usually means:
- High temperatures
- Intense humidity
- Daily afternoon rainstorms
- Strong UV exposure
- Sweaty park days from basically 9 a.m. onward
And it’s not just “hot.”
Florida heat feels heavy. You walk outside and instantly feel sticky. Then add 20,000+ steps, crowded parks, and standing in the sun for ride queues and fireworks… and you really need to prepare differently than you would for a normal vacation.
The good news? Packing correctly helps SO much.
What to Wear to Disney World in Summer
Lightweight Disney Outfits That Actually Work in the Heat
My biggest advice? Prioritize comfort over cute.
I know. Easier said than done at Disney hahaha.
But summer at Disney World is not the time for heavy fabrics, uncomfortable shoes, or complicated outfits.
Some of my favorite Disney World summer outfit options are:
- Tank dresses
- Athletic dresses
- Running shorts and oversized tees
- Lightweight tanks
- Biker shorts
- Breathable athletic fabrics
- Loose linen button-downs for sun protection
And honestly, covering your shoulders can actually help on especially sunny days. I know it sounds counterproductive because it’s SO hot, but sunburn at Disney World is miserable.
Don’t Forget a Hat & Sunglasses
These make a bigger difference than people realize.
A good hat helps with:
- Direct sun exposure
- Heat exhaustion
- Headaches
- Sweaty hair situations hahaha
And sunglasses are an absolute must if you’re spending full days in the parks.
Disney World Summer Packing Essentials
Packing for Disney World in the summer is truly an art form hahaha. Between the Florida heat, afternoon rain showers, and long park days, having the right essentials can make a huge difference in how comfortable you feel throughout your trip.
These are the items I always recommend packing to help you stay cool, comfortable, and prepared from rope drop to fireworks.
Cooling Essentials for Disney World
Cooling Towels
Cooling towels are one of those things that seem gimmicky until you’re standing in a 45-minute outdoor queue in July.
They genuinely help cool your body down and are easy to re-wet throughout the day.
Portable Fans
Portable fans are ESSENTIAL for Disney World in summer.
Especially:
- neck fans
- handheld fans
- rechargeable fans
If you’re doing long park days, you’ll use this constantly.
I never go to Disney World in the summer without a rechargeable portable fan now. It’s one of the few park bag items I use literally every single day.
Refillable Water Bottles
Bring one. Seriously.
Water is free at Disney World quick-service restaurants, and there are refill stations throughout the parks.
One of my biggest Disney World summer tips – get a free cup of ice water anytime you stop for food. Hydration matters SO much in Florida heat.
Electrolyte Packets
Electrolytes make a massive difference during summer Disney trips.
I love:
- Liquid IV
- DripDrop
- Salud
Especially after long park days or afternoon heat exhaustion moments.
Throw a few packets into your park bag every morning.
Ponchos & Umbrellas
Florida afternoon rainstorms happen FAST.
One minute it’s sunny. The next minute everyone in Fantasyland is panic-buying ponchos hahaha.
I always pack:
- a lightweight poncho
- a compact umbrella
- Ziplock bags for phones and electronics
And honestly? A small umbrella is also helpful for sun protection while waiting outdoors too!
Anti-Chafe Products
This is not glamorous but it is IMPORTANT hahaha.
Between humidity, walking, and sweat, anti-chafe products are absolutely essential for Disney World summer trips.
Especially:
- thighs
- feet
- sports bra lines
- backpack strap areas
Trust me on this one.
Body Wipes & Hand Wipes
Body wipes are AMAZING during midday breaks.
Especially if you:
- go back to your hotel midday
- freshen up before dinner
- park hop
- feel gross after a rainstorm
I also always carry hand wipes or wet wipes because Disney snacks get messy FAST. Also, there are way too many people touching things hahaha. I always like to keep my hands clean.
Cooling Gel Sheets
These are honestly one of my secret Disney World packing items.
They’re technically meant for headaches or fevers, but they feel AMAZING in the heat.
I like putting them:
- on my chest
- on the back of my neck
- under my shirt during hot afternoons
Especially during summer trips.
Aloe Vera & After Sun Care
Even if you’re careful, Florida sun can still get you.
I always pack:
- aloe vera gel
- Vitamin E oil
- after-sun lotion
Your skin will thank you later.
Trying to do multiple parks in one day during Summer?
Here are my best Disney World park hopping tips to make the day way less chaotic.
What to Keep in Your Disney Park Bag
Disney World Park Bag Essentials
A comfortable park bag makes a HUGE difference during summer trips.
Personally, I like:
- lightweight backpacks
- belt bags
- roomy crossbody bags
Whatever works best for you, just make sure it’s comfortable enough for all-day wear.
Things I Always Keep in My Disney Park Bag
- Sunscreen sticks for reapplication
- Chapstick
- Hair ties
- Hand sanitizer
- Band-Aids/Moleskin
- Pain reliever
- Motion sickness medicine
- Stomach medicine
- Snacks
- Wet wipes
- Portable charger
- Electrolyte packets
- Poncho
- Sunglasses
- Earplugs if you have noise sensitivities
And a random one – Ziplock bags deserve their own section hahaha.
They’re perfect for:
- protecting phones on water rides
- unfinished snacks
- wet clothes
- storing small items
Best Shoes for Disney World in Summer
Comfortable Walking Shoes Matter SO Much
You will walk SO much at Disney World.
Truly an insane amount.
So good shoes are one of the most important things you can pack.
My biggest advice: Do NOT bring brand-new shoes to Disney World.
You want:
- broken-in sneakers
- supportive walking shoes
- blister prevention
- breathable socks
And if rain is in the forecast, some people love bringing Crocs or waterproof sandals so they’re not stuck walking around in wet socks all day.
If you’re staying on Disney property, you can also head back to your room midday and switch shoes if needed or store some in a locker.
Switching up your footwear daily helps to keep you from hitting the same pressure points each day.
Disney World Summer Tips That Actually Help
Start Your Disney Day Early
Summer afternoons at Disney World are BRUTAL.
The earlier you start your day, the better.
Rope drop mornings honestly feel way more manageable temperature-wise than mid-afternoon park hours.
Take Midday Breaks
This is one of the BEST Disney World summer strategies.
Go back to your resort.
Cool down.
Nap.
Swim.
Shower.
Recharge.
Trying to power through a full open-to-close summer park day without breaks can get miserable fast.
I understand you may not always have the luxury of a hotel break – if you’re staying off property or your hotel is just a bit further than you’d like. But taking some time to rest in one of the hotels for a bit really helps.
Take those breaks!!
Planning a group trip to Disney World?
If you’re coordinating a Disney trip with friends or family, these large group Disney World tips can seriously save your sanity.
Plan Ahead
Mobile order meals ahead of time. Make reservations and book your rides with the app. Have a rough game plan.
Summer Disney trips are way smoother when you’re not wandering around overheated trying to make decisions.
Bring Random Items
Tiny things honestly make the biggest difference at Disney World.
One random item I swear by?
A mini squeegee hahaha.
After Florida rainstorms, outdoor tables and chairs are SOAKED. A tiny travel squeegee makes it easy to dry them off before sitting down.
A weird Disney World packing item? Absolutely.
But also weirdly useful.
Also, pack a fun game for the line. A popular one is Heads Up – it’s a phone app so it’s easy to have with you.
A dek of cards is fun to keep for the room or hanging out at a restaurant or lounge. Random little toys for the kiddos are also good too to keep their hands busy.
Final Thoughts on What to Pack for Disney World in the Summer
Packing for Disney World in summer is all about preparing for comfort.
Because when you’re overheated, dehydrated, sunburned, or dealing with blisters… it’s really hard to enjoy the magic.
But with the right shoes, cooling essentials, hydration, and park bag setup, summer Disney trips can still be SO fun.
Yes, it’s hot.
Yes, you’ll sweat.
Yes, you’ll probably get caught in at least one random Florida rainstorm hahaha.
But there’s also something really special about summer nights at Disney World, late-night rides, fireworks, resort pools, and long park days that somehow still feel magical even when you’re exhausted.
I hope this guide helps you pack smarter, stay cooler, and enjoy your Disney World summer vacation a whole lot more.
XOXO,
Julia
