A complete look at what I wore to San Diego Comic-Con 2026, including a book-inspired character outfit, a casual Spider-Man look, and the very important lesson that comfortable shoes always win.
One of my favorite parts of planning for San Diego Comic-Con was figuring out what I wanted to wear.
I love a themed outfit. I love making jewelry. I love adding tiny details that might not make sense to everyone but make perfect sense to me.
And Comic-Con is the perfect place for that.
You can wear a full cosplay, a character-inspired outfit, a fandom T-shirt, something you made yourself, or just an outfit that feels fun. Anything goes.
I had badges for Thursday and Sunday, and we also spent Saturday exploring the Comic-Con activations around downtown San Diego. That gave me three completely different outfit days to plan.
For Thursday, I dressed as Artemis Darth Vader from The Bones Beneath My Skin by T.J. Klune.
On Saturday, I kept things casual and comfortable with a Spider-Man outfit for walking around the Gaslamp Quarter.
On Sunday, I dressed as…time?
The White Rabbit? Big Ben? The general concept of time?
Honestly, I still do not know.
But I loved every outfit, learned several important lessons about bags and shoes, and already started talking about what we should wear to Comic-Con next year.

Planning My San Diego Comic-Con Outfits
I knew I wanted every outfit to feel fun, but I also knew we would be walking a lot.
And when I say a lot, I mean more than 20,000 steps on some days.
Comic-Con involves walking through the convention center, standing in lines, sitting through panels, exploring the Gaslamp Quarter, visiting activations, shopping, and somehow finding your way back to your car, hotel, bus, or train at the end of the night.
Comfort had to be part of the plan.
At the same time, this is Comic-Con. I did not want to wear a completely normal outfit when I had the perfect excuse to dress like a book character, cover myself in watches, or pull out jewelry I originally made for Avengers Campus.
The goal was to find a balance between themed and wearable.
Did I always achieve that balance?
Not exactly.
But I tried.
Thursday Outfit: Artemis Darth Vader
Thursday was our first official Comic-Con day, and I dressed as Artemis Darth Vader from The Bones Beneath My Skin by T.J. Klune.
I absolutely loved this book and immediately felt connected to Artemis.
They are silly, curious, open, and completely full of wonder. They ask questions, love breakfast foods, read old Western novels, and call themselves Artemis Darth Vader.
How could I not love them?
As soon as I finished the book, I wanted to bring the character to life. San Diego Comic-Con felt like the perfect place to do it.
Creating My Artemis Darth Vader Shirt
I started with a Darth Vader shirt and added a bedazzled “Artemis” across the front.
Then I added a ton of little star-shaped rhinestones because apparently I am incapable of knowing when to stop bedazzling something.
The book takes place in the 1990s, so I wanted the rest of the outfit to have a slightly grungy, 90s-kid feel.
I wore:
- Wide-leg barrel jeans
- Darth Vader shirt
- Converse sneakers
- A satchel bag
- A cowboy hat
- Handmade necklaces and bracelets
- A small cow plush
- A little alien plush
The cowboy hat was a nod to Artemis loving old Western books.
The cow and alien plushies were little details that reminded me of the story and the character. I also covered my satchel bag with pins and patches that felt like things Artemis would enjoy.
I made a lot of the jewelry myself, including several necklaces and bracelets. This was one of those outfits where the tiny details were the most fun part.
Was My Thursday Comic-Con Outfit Comfortable?
The outfit itself was surprisingly comfortable.
The loose jeans worked well for a long day, my Converse were easy to walk in, and the shirt was comfortable inside the convention center.
The satchel bag, however, was not it.
It looked cute with the outfit, but it became heavy very quickly. Carrying the weight on one shoulder was uncomfortable, especially once I added water, snacks, a portable charger, and all the merch I bought.
I eventually transferred everything into the large Comic-Con bag we received when we entered.
It could be worn like a backpack, and that was so much easier.
We also packed a separate backpack, but my husband carried that one.
Overall, I absolutely loved this outfit.
I had never seen anyone dress as Artemis Darth Vader before, so I was especially happy that I decided to do it.
Saturday Outfit: Casual Spider-Man Shirt & Romper
Saturday was a no-badge day for us.
We only had badges for Thursday and Sunday, so we used Saturday to walk around downtown San Diego and explore the brand activations throughout the Gaslamp Quarter.
There are so many Comic-Con activations outside the convention center.
Some are inside hotels. Others are behind the convention center, along the waterfront, or tucked into spaces you might not notice unless you already know they are there.
I really wish there were one complete map showing every activation because it is very easy to miss things.
Saturday was also extremely hot and humid.
We walked a good distance into downtown to avoid the most expensive Comic-Con parking, so I knew I needed comfortable shoes and something lightweight.
What I Wore for the Comic-Con Activations
I wore:
- A lightweight gingham romper
- A Spider-Man T-shirt
- A handmade Spider-Man necklace
- Adidas sneakers
- A small Baggu bag
- A shared backpack
- A sun umbrella
My gingham romper is one of the most comfortable things I own.
It is lightweight, easy to move around in, and worked well for spending most of the day outside.
Since it was still Comic-Con weekend, I wanted to add something themed. I wore my Spider-Man shirt and a Spider-Man necklace that I made a few years ago for the opening of Avengers Campus at Disneyland.
I wore Adidas sneakers because I knew we would be walking all over downtown.
For bags, I carried a small Baggu with my phone, wallet, and charger. My husband and I also shared a larger backpack for water, snacks, and anything else we needed throughout the day.
And, of course, I packed an umbrella for the sun.
I know umbrellas are usually associated with rain, but during a hot San Diego summer day, I am using mine for shade.
This was probably my simplest outfit of the weekend, but it was exactly what I needed for a long, hot day outside.
Sunday Outfit: My Time-Inspired Comic-Con Outfit
Sunday Funday!
Sunday was our final Comic-Con day.
We walked to the convention center again and ended the day with more than 20,000 steps.
The walking!
By the end of the day, I was falling apart. We took the bus home because I simply could not walk anymore.
But the day started out great.
For my final outfit, I was “time.”
What kind of time?
I could not tell you.
Was I referencing the White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland?
Was I referencing Big Ben from Peter Pan?
Was I simply dressed as the general idea of time?
I do not know.
Building My Clock Outfit
The outfit started with a giant clock shirt that I purchased from an independent designer while visiting Portland.
I immediately fell in love with it and knew I had to wear it to Comic-Con.
My husband then had the brilliant idea that I should wear a bunch of watches with it.
Genius.
My husband really understands me.
I wore:
- The oversized clock shirt
- A crop top underneath
- Bike shorts
- Three watch necklaces
- Three watches
- Black boots
- Slides packed as backup shoes
Several other watch bracelets and a watch ring arrived in the mail the next day.
Boooooo.
It is okay, though. That just means I have to wear the outfit again.
The shirt was oversized and comfortable, and wearing bike shorts underneath made it easy to walk around and sit through panels.
I also loved the boots.
For most of the day.
Why I Changed Shoes at the End of the Day
Here is the truth: boots are not convention shoes for me.
I want them to be.
I like to pretend that I am someone who can wear boots all day.
I am not.
I get overwhelmed easily, my feet start hurting, and once my feet hurt, I stop having fun.
I already know this about myself.
Luckily, my husband thought ahead and told me to grab my slides before we left that morning.
Genius again.
As we were leaving Comic-Con, I took off my boots, put on the slides, and immediately became a happier person.
I absolutely loved the outfit. It was not really a cosplay, and it was not exactly a character bound.
It was just fun.
And I love a fun outfit.
What Shoes Should You Wear to Comic-Con?
Wear the most comfortable shoes you own.
Not the shoes you wish were comfortable.
Not the shoes that are comfortable for dinner.
Not the shoes you wore around your house for 20 minutes and decided were probably fine.
Wear the shoes you know you can walk several miles in.
For me, that means sneakers.
My Converse worked well on Thursday, and my Adidas sneakers were perfect for walking around downtown on Saturday.
The boots were cute on Sunday, but they were not the right choice for a full convention day.
Bringing backup slides saved me at the end of the night, but I would not recommend wearing slides as your main shoes. Your feet will appreciate more support and protection in the crowded exhibit hall.
A supportive sneaker is probably the safest choice for most Comic-Con days.
Choosing the Right Bag for Comic-Con
Your Comic-Con bag can affect your entire day.
I learned this very quickly on Thursday.
The satchel looked great with my Artemis outfit, but carrying everything on one shoulder became uncomfortable. Once I switched to the large backpack-style Comic-Con bag, I felt much better.
For future convention days, I would choose:
- A lightweight backpack with comfortable straps
- A smaller crossbody or belt bag for my phone and wallet
- A foldable reusable bag for merch
- A bag with enough room for water, snacks, and a portable charger
You can still carry a themed bag for photos, but you might want a more practical option available for the rest of the day.
Comic-Con is not the time to pretend you do not need snacks, water, chargers, and five unnecessary accessories.
You do.
My Best San Diego Comic-Con Outfit Tips
After three outfit days and thousands of steps, these are the biggest lessons I learned.
Dress for San Diego Weather
San Diego is not always extremely hot in the summer, but Comic-Con weekend can be sunny, warm, and humid.
Saturday felt especially hot because we spent most of the day outside in the Gaslamp Quarter.
Wear breathable fabrics and bring sun protection if you plan to explore the outdoor activations.
Plan for Air-Conditioning Too
Even when it is hot outside, parts of the convention center can feel cold.
A lightweight layer or shirt that covers your shoulders can help if you plan to sit through several panels.
Test the Entire Outfit Before Comic-Con
Try everything on together before the event.
That includes the shoes, jewelry, bag, hat, wig, and any accessories.
Walk around in it.
Sit down in it.
Make sure you can use the bathroom in it.
Carry your packed bag while wearing it.
Something can feel comfortable for five minutes at home and become deeply annoying after several hours.
Keep Heavy Accessories to a Minimum
I clearly do not always follow this advice.
However, heavy necklaces, hats, belts, props, and bags can become uncomfortable by the middle of the day.
Choose the details that matter most and leave yourself room to remove accessories if needed.
Pack Backup Shoes
My slides saved me on Sunday.
Even when you think your shoes will be fine, a lightweight backup pair can make the walk home much easier.
You Do Not Need a Full Cosplay
You can wear a full cosplay if that makes you happy.
You can also wear a themed T-shirt, character-inspired accessories, handmade jewelry, or something that simply reminds you of a fandom you love.
My Sunday clock outfit was not connected to one specific character, but it still felt completely appropriate for Comic-Con.
The point is to have fun.
Finding My Spark Again at Comic-Con
Sometimes I feel like I have lost my spark.
I think part of it is that I am tired all the time now, and people do not really throw themed events very often.
There are not many opportunities in everyday life to cover a shirt in rhinestones, wear six watches, or dress as a character from a book that made you happy.
But Comic-Con is the biggest themed event there is.
Anything goes.
You can wear something simple or elaborate. You can dress as a character everyone recognizes or one that only five people in the entire building understand.
You can make your own jewelry, carry a prop, wear a fandom T-shirt, or build a group costume with your friends.
Comic-Con gave me something to get excited about.
It made me want to create again.
It made me want to get dressed up, make things, plan outfits, and bring back a little of that sparkle I felt like I had lost.
I think I need more of that.
More reasons to get out.
More things to look forward to.
More opportunities to dress like the general concept of time.
Final Thoughts
I absolutely loved San Diego Comic-Con.
The energy was amazing, and everywhere we looked, people were wearing incredible cosplays, themed outfits, handmade costumes, and shirts representing the stories and characters they love.
You can tell how much people love what they love.
And I love seeing people openly love what they love.
Everyone gets to feel like a kid again. Everyone gets to geek out. Everyone gets to find other people who are excited about the same things.
At one point, my husband saw a shirt he liked and stopped the person wearing it to ask about the character.
They ended up having a genuine 10-minute conversation about the character, the shirt, and a panel they had attended.
It happened so naturally.
People love talking about the things that make them happy, and Comic-Con gives everyone permission to do exactly that.
By the end of the weekend, we were already discussing what we wanted to wear next year. We started talking about group outfits, themes, and all the things we could make.
That excitement might be the best part of Comic-Con.
The planning. The creativity. The joy. The chance to be around thousands of people who are just as excited to be there as you are.
Next year, I will bring more comfortable shoes.
But I will probably bring even more accessories.
