I have officially put Castaway Cay on my list of favorite vacation days ever.
Like… ever ever.
My husband and I took a Disney Cruise as a couples trip, and while I knew I was excited for Castaway Cay, I wasn’t expecting to love it as much as I did.
The second we stepped off the ship, I got it.
Crystal-clear water. Soft white sand. Relaxing beach chairs. Fun tropical drinks. Snorkeling. Bike trails. An adults-only beach.
It honestly felt like the perfect beach vacation wrapped into one day.
If you’re wondering whether a Disney Cruise is worth it for adults, let Castaway Cay be the thing that convinces you. This ended up being one of our favorite days of the entire cruise, and I already can’t wait to go back.
The best part is that you can make the day completely your own. Want to stay active? Rent a bike or walk the Castaway Cay 5K. Want to do absolutely nothing? Grab a chair at Serenity Bay, order a drink, and spend the afternoon floating in the warm Bahamian water.
There really isn’t a wrong way to spend the day.

Our Perfect Adult Day at Castaway Cay: A Step-by-Step Itinerary
If you’re wondering how to spend your day at Castaway Cay as adults, this is exactly what we did. Looking back, I wouldn’t change much. It ended up being the perfect balance of staying active, slowing down, eating way too much barbecue, and simply enjoying one of the prettiest beaches we’ve ever visited.
Of course, everyone’s perfect day will look a little different, but if you’re looking for inspiration, here’s how we spent ours from start to finish.

7:00–8:00 AM | Start the Morning with Breakfast on the Ship
One of my biggest tips is to eat breakfast before you leave the ship.
Not only is it one less thing to think about once you’re on the island, but it also gives you plenty of energy if you’re planning to walk the 5K or rent bikes first thing in the morning.
We like getting off the ship fairly early, so having breakfast onboard helped us maximize our time at Castaway Cay.
Plus, the ship is usually much quieter while everyone is getting ready to head ashore, so it’s a nice, relaxed way to start the day.
8:30–9:00 AM | Disembark & Castaway Cay 5k
This was the very first thing we did, and I’m so glad we did.
The Castaway Cay 5K isn’t timed anymore, so there’s no pressure to race. You can run it, walk it, or take your time and enjoy the scenery.
More importantly…
Do it before it gets hot.
The Bahamas heat sneaks up on you quickly, and there isn’t much shade along the course.
Finishing the walk first meant we could spend the rest of the day relaxing.
Plus, you get a super fun medal at the end, which makes a great free souvenir from the island.

10:00 AM | Head Straight to Serenity Bay
After finishing the 5K, we made our way over to Serenity Bay, the adults-only beach at Castaway Cay.
This ended up being my favorite place on the entire island.
The water is unbelievably clear, the beach feels peaceful, and everything moves at a slower pace.
A lot of adults head here first thing in the morning to grab chairs closest to the water or the bar.
Since we did the 5K first, we arrived a little later.
Honestly?
It wasn’t a problem at all.
Our chairs were a little farther down the beach, but I actually preferred it because it was quieter.
Don’t stress if you aren’t one of the first people there.
There’s plenty of room.
10:00 AM–12:00 PM | Float, Swim & Completely Lose Track of Time
The water at Serenity Bay is incredibly shallow for quite a long distance, so we spent what felt like hours simply floating, talking, and enjoying being on vacation.
No schedule.
No rush.
No checking the time.
It was exactly the kind of vacation day I needed.
The Cast Members also walk along the beach taking drink orders, which means you don’t even have to leave your chair if you’d rather stay put.
I fully embraced that.
12:30 PM | Lunch at Serenity Bay BBQ
Serenity Bay BBQ Hours: 11:30 AM – 2:00 PM
Y’all…Why was this barbecue so good?
I am not normally someone who gets excited about barbecue ribs.
I had four.
FOUR!
And I probably could have eaten four more.
I also grabbed a hot dog, loaded it up with potato salad – which is one of my favorite ways to eat a hot dog – and finished everything with dessert.
The best part?
Lunch is included with your Disney Cruise.
Soft drinks, water, and dessert are also included.
Alcoholic beverages are available for an additional charge.

1:30–3:00 PM | Go Snorkeling & Explore the Island
After lunch, we headed back toward the main beach area to go snorkeling.
We ended up spending a couple of hours in the water, and it was so much fun.
Even if snorkeling isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other activities to choose from.
You can rent:
- Bikes
- Floats
- Paddleboards
- Aqua Trikes
- Inner tubes
Or simply continue relaxing on the beach.
There are also Disney characters making appearances around the island, so don’t forget to stop for a few photos if that sounds fun to you.
3:00 PM | One Last Tropical Drink
Before heading back to the ship, we grabbed one more drink.
This might have been my favorite moment of the entire day.
We sat in our beach chairs, looked out at the water, and just soaked it all in.
No rushing.
No itinerary to follow anymore.
Just enjoying being exactly where we were.
If you have a good book with you, this would be the perfect time to read a few chapters.
Or just sit there.
Sometimes that’s enough.
3:30 PM | Browse the Gift Shops
Before making our way back to the ship, we stopped by the gift shop.
Honestly, everything on Castaway Cay feels like a souvenir.
Whether it’s your 5K medal, a Disney Cruise shirt, or a Christmas ornament, it’s fun to take a little piece of the island home with you.
4:00 PM | Head Back to the Ship
For our sailing, everyone needed to be back onboard by 4:45 PM, but we headed back around 4:00 PM.
I never like cutting it close on a cruise.
I’d rather leave a little early, take my time walking back, and enjoy those last views of Castaway Cay without watching the clock.
By the time we were back onboard, we were sun-kissed, happily exhausted, and definitely ready for showers and a quick nap before Pirate Night.
Looking back, I can’t think of a better way we could have spent the day.
Extra Upgrades Worth Considering at Castaway Cay
One of the things I love about Castaway Cay is that you can have an amazing day without spending anything extra. Between the beaches, lunch, walking trails, and snorkeling areas, there’s already plenty to do that’s included with your Disney Cruise.
That said, if you’re celebrating something special or just want to splurge a little, there are a couple of upgrades that I’d love to try on a future visit.
Is a Castaway Cay Cabana Worth It?
I haven’t booked a cabana yet, but it’s definitely on my Disney Cruise bucket list.
If you’re traveling with a larger group, celebrating a special occasion, or simply want your own private space for the day, I can absolutely see why people love them.
From everything I’ve read and watched, the biggest perk is having a dedicated place to come back to throughout the day. You have shade, comfortable seating, snacks and drinks nearby, and a quiet home base without needing to search for beach chairs.
During busier sailings, especially holidays and summer cruises, I think having that guaranteed space would be really nice.
For us, Serenity Bay had plenty of seating by the time we arrived, so we didn’t feel like we missed out. But I’d still love to experience a cabana one day just to see what all the hype is about.
Castaway Cay Massage Experience
Another experience I’d love to try is one of the beachside massages at Castaway Cay.
I mean… a massage with an ocean breeze and the sound of waves in the background? That sounds pretty perfect to me.
We didn’t book one this time because we had already packed our day with the 5K, snorkeling, and plenty of relaxing at Serenity Bay. But if you’re planning a slower-paced day or celebrating an anniversary, honeymoon, or birthday, I think this would be such a fun way to treat yourself.
When to Head Back to the Ship
One thing I always recommend on a cruise is giving yourself plenty of time to get back to the ship.
For our sailing, everyone needed to be back onboard by 4:45 PM, but we made our way back around 4:00 PM.
Could we have squeezed in another drink or another swim?
Probably.
But I never want to spend the last part of vacation worrying about making it back in time. I’d much rather leave a little early, take my time walking back to the ship, and enjoy those last views of Castaway Cay without feeling rushed.

Castaway Cay Tips for Adults
Before you head to the island, here are a few tips that made our day even better.
Get Off the Ship Early
You don’t have to be one of the very first people off the ship, but I do recommend getting an early start.
It gives you plenty of time to enjoy the island before the afternoon heat really sets in, especially if you’re planning to walk the Castaway Cay 5K or rent bikes.
Start with the 5K or Bike Ride
If you’re thinking about doing the Castaway Cay 5K, do it first.
The trail has very little shade, and it gets hot and humid surprisingly quickly.
We were so glad we knocked it out first thing in the morning because the rest of the day was all about relaxing.
Don’t Stress About Getting the “Perfect” Beach Chair
You’ll probably see people heading straight to Serenity Bay to claim chairs near the water.
We actually did the 5K first and didn’t arrive at Serenity Bay until later in the morning.
We still found chairs.
Sure, they weren’t in the very front row, but they were still fantastic. Honestly, I kind of preferred being a little farther down the beach because it felt even quieter.
Bring an Insulated Tumbler
One of the best things I packed for the entire cruise was my insulated tumbler.
Between the Bahamas heat and spending hours at the beach, having cold water throughout the day made a huge difference.
Don’t Forget the Sunscreen
I know this sounds obvious, but seriously… don’t underestimate the Bahamian sun.
Apply sunscreen before you leave the ship, bring it with you to the island, and actually reapply it throughout the day.
Future you will be very thankful.
Pack a Beach Bag You’ll Actually Enjoy Carrying
You’ll be bringing sunscreen, towels, a cover-up, a water bottle, your room key, sunglasses, and probably a few souvenirs back to the ship.
Having one lightweight beach bag that comfortably fits everything makes the day so much easier.
Bring Water Shoes If They’re Comfortable for You
We were perfectly happy in sandals, but if you’re planning to spend a lot of time snorkeling or just prefer extra protection walking in and out of the water, water shoes can be worth packing.
Slow Down and Enjoy It
This is probably my biggest tip.
You don’t have to rush around trying to do every single activity.
Float in the water.
Order another tropical drink.
Read a chapter of your book.
Take a walk along the beach.
One of my favorite things about Castaway Cay was that it gave us permission to slow down.
After a few busy days on the ship, it felt really nice to spend an entire day with nowhere to be and nothing on the schedule except enjoying ourselves.
I think that’s exactly what made it one of my favorite vacation days ever.
What I’d Definitely Pack Again for Castaway Cay
After spending a full day on Castaway Cay, there are a few things that I’ll absolutely be packing again on our next Disney Cruise.
None of these are required, of course, but they were the items that genuinely made the day more comfortable, more relaxing, and just a little more enjoyable.
If you’re getting ready for your own Disney Cruise, these are the things I’d throw into my beach bag without even thinking twice.
A Lightweight Beach Bag
You’re going to be carrying more than you think.
Between towels, sunscreen, a cover-up, your room key, sunglasses, a water bottle, and any souvenirs you pick up throughout the day, having one roomy beach bag makes everything so much easier.
I always look for something that’s lightweight, easy to carry, and big enough to hold everything for a full beach day without feeling bulky.
An Insulated Tumbler
If I could only recommend one thing to pack for Castaway Cay, it would probably be an insulated tumbler.
The Bahamas heat is no joke, and having ice water stay cold all day made such a difference.
I refilled mine constantly throughout the cruise, and it was easily one of my most-used items.
Comfortable Sandals
Castaway Cay is definitely a walking day.
You’ll be walking off the ship, around the island, through the sand, to lunch, to the gift shops, and eventually back to the ship.
I always choose sandals that are comfortable enough for a full day on my feet but still cute enough for vacation photos.
Sunscreen (And Reapply It!)
Please don’t underestimate the Bahamian sun.
Seriously.
Apply sunscreen before you leave the ship, bring it with you to the island, and remember to reapply throughout the day.
Your future self will thank you.
A Portable Fan
I feel like I recommend portable fans for almost every warm-weather trip I take… because they always end up being worth it.
They’re small, easy to throw into a beach bag, and make such a difference while walking around the island or relaxing on particularly warm afternoons.
A Lightweight Cover-Up
One of my favorite things about Castaway Cay is that you’re constantly moving between the beach, restaurants, gift shops, and walking paths.
Having a lightweight cover-up makes it easy to throw something on without completely changing outfits.
It’s simple, comfortable, and one of those little things that just makes the day easier.
At the end of the day, you definitely don’t need to buy a bunch of new things before your cruise.
But if you’re looking to make your beach day a little more comfortable, these are the items that I personally found myself reaching for over and over again.
