A look inside Carlsbad Village Books, the newest independent bookstore in Carlsbad Village. Here’s what you’ll find, what we bought, and why I already can’t wait to go back.
If there’s one thing my sister and I will always make time for, it’s visiting a bookstore.
So when we heard a brand-new independent bookstore was opening in Carlsbad Village, we were counting down the days until opening weekend.
We grabbed our friend Carmen, ordered coffee, browsed shelves for over an hour, and somehow still wanted more time.
If you’re wondering whether Carlsbad Village Books is worth visiting, here’s what our first trip was like.

About Carlsbad Village Books

Carlsbad Village Books is a new independent bookstore that just opened in Carlsbad Village.
The building used to be an old Irish pub and they kept so much of that cozy feeling of an old building but made it vibrant and full of life.
There’s a ton of brick and two gorgeous fireplaces. Lots of exposed wood beams and handmade furniture.
Everything feels like a home. Its comfortable and cozy.
The store offers kids books, fantasy, romance, board games and a great cafe.
It’s the perfect place to add to your Carlsbad Village bucket list.

What You’ll Find Inside

Carlsbad Village Books has a little bit of everything.
Inside, you’ll find new and used books, a large children’s section, fantasy and romance shelves, fiction and non-fiction titles, board games, bookish gifts, and of course, the café.
Honestly, we spent about an hour and a half wandering around and still felt like we could have stayed longer.
The Used Book Section
Let’s start with my favorite part.
The used book section was fantastic.
All of the used books were just $5, and I was genuinely shocked by how many popular titles they had available. There were so many books that felt practically brand new.
I will never understand how people let go of their books. I hold onto mine forever. Hahaha.
But their loss is my gain because I absolutely picked up a couple of used books while we were there.
Romance & Fantasy

The romance and fantasy section immediately caught my eye.
That’s always where you’ll find me in a bookstore, and Carlsbad Village Books did not disappoint.
They had many of the big titles and fan favorites, including A Court of Thorns and Roses, Dungeon Crawler Carl, Heated Rivalry, and so much more.
Needless to say, I could have spent a lot more time browsing those shelves.
Children’s Books & Gifts

The children’s section was surprisingly large and included a nice little play area for kids.
I immediately thought about how great this bookstore is going to be for local families. It’s easy to imagine parents grabbing a coffee while their kids explore the shelves and pick out their next favorite book.
The store also has a wonderful selection of bookish gifts, including tote bags, magnets, stickers, and other little treasures that make perfect gifts for the reader in your life.
Board Games & Community Spaces

Another thing that stood out to me was the board game section.
They had a display case that looked like it was set up for buying, selling, or trading cards, which I thought was such a fun touch. It gives the bookstore a little bit of that neighborhood game shop feel.
I would absolutely love to see them add a few tables in that area for people to gather and play games.
I really believe people need places to simply exist for a while. Places where they can meet friends, play games, read a book, or enjoy a cup of coffee without feeling rushed.
Carlsbad Village Books feels like it has the potential to become exactly that.
The Café at Carlsbad Village Books

The bookstore has its own cafe!! This is a huge bonus because browsing books and sipping a coffee is my favorite thing ever.
For some reason, having a good little drink with you makes everything better.
The new Cafe in Carlsbad Village Books is called Marla’s.
You can enter the cafe from the back of the shop or from the main bookstore.
There was a good amount of indoor and outdoor seating. Plus they had a gorgeous brick fireplace too.
I can’t wait to come back and relax here with a new book.
We each ordered a drink from Marla’s and they were fantastic. I ordered a dirty chai latte and my bestie ordered a vanilla latte. We loved them!
What We Bought

Alrighty, I purchased a few things – as always.
Of course I had to purchase the Carlsbad Village Books branded tote bag. For obvious reasons. And then I picked up two books.
I went back the following week because I couldn’t stay away and ended up grabbing another book too.
All books were from the used book section and only $5 each.
My Favorite Things About Carlsbad Village Books

My favorite things about Carlsbad Vilage Books is the community atmosphere. I loved seeing how many people came out to support the new shop.
I’ve been back since opening day, and the bookstore and the cafe have already become staples in peoples routines.
I saw parents with their kids hanging out in the childrens book areas.
I saw people working from the cafe and friends meeting up for morning coffee.
You can already see how Carlsbad Village Books fits into the community. I love it.
And you can’t beat the location. With ample parking and its so close to endless restaurants and small shops.
I would love to see the bookstore expand to host community events, book clubs, book signings and more!
Tips Before You Visit

Before you head to Carlsbad Village Books, here are a few tips from your resident Vacation Prepper:
- Visit in the morning if you want to grab coffee and avoid the larger crowds.
- Plan to spend at least an hour exploring the bookstore (trust me, you’ll need it).
- Bring a reusable tote bag—you’ll probably leave with more books than you planned.
- Pair your visit with a walk around Carlsbad Village afterward.
- Grab lunch nearby and turn it into a full North County day out.
- Check their Instagram before your visit for updates, events, and new arrivals.
- Bring a friend who loves books because bookstore adventures are always more fun together.
If I were planning the perfect morning, I’d grab a dirty chai, browse the used book section, pick up a new fantasy novel, and then spend the rest of the afternoon wandering around Carlsbad Village.
After picking up a few new books, one of my favorite ways to spend the rest of the afternoon is exploring more of Carlsbad Village. If you’re looking for more ideas, check out my guide to the best things to do in Carlsbad Village.
Is Carlsbad Village Books Worth Visiting?

Absolutely.
Whether you’re a lifelong reader, a coffee lover, a parent looking for a fun afternoon activity, or someone who simply enjoys supporting local businesses, Carlsbad Village Books is worth adding to your list.
Even if you only stop in for a quick coffee and leave with “just one book” (which, let’s be honest, is never how these things work), I think you’ll be happy you visited.
It’s one of those places that immediately feels like it’s been part of the community for years.
