As you plan your adventure to Walt Disney World, it’s essential to consider the various transportation options available within the Disney resort.
The entire Disney World property is 43 sq miles, with a number of highways and large bodies of water. It’s not easily walkable, like Disneyland in California.
This blog post is all about the types of transportation to use at Disney World and the best types of navigating on your vacation.
I understand how important it is to optimize your time at Disney World, especially when you’re trying to make ride and dining reservations.
Transportation plays a pivotal role in ensuring seamless transitions between the Parks and making those big reservations and avoiding meltdowns.
I’ll walk you through everything you need to know about getting around Disney World, from monorails to boats and beyond to make your vacation as magical as possible.
How to Get Around Disney World
Take Advantage of Disney Transportation Options. Walt Disney World offers an extensive network of transportation options, including buses, boats, monorails, and the iconic Disney Skyliner.
Each mode of transportation is designed to efficiently transport guests between theme parks, resorts, and other attractions within the resort.
By utilizing Disney’s complimentary transportation services, guests can bypass traffic congestion and parking challenges. Continue reading to find out which modes of transportation will work best for you and your family during your trip.
The Disney Monorail
The iconic monorail offers easy transportation between select resorts and Magic Kingdom. It’s also how you will get to Magic Kingdom if you aren’t staying along the monorail path.
For access to Magic Kingdom, you will be dropped off at the transportation center and have to take the monorail into Magic Kingdom.
It’s one of the best and of course, iconic, ways to get around Disney World. Plus, the monorail holds a ton of guests at once, so it’s usually not too long of a wait.
The monorail can get very crowded during peak travel times like early mornings and evenings around park closing time.
Disney’s Minnie Van Service
Operated by Disney Cast Members, these themed vehicles provide direct transportation to various locations throughout the resort, including theme parks, water parks, and Disney Springs.
To utilize this service, simply download the Lyft app, select the Minnie Van option, and request a ride to your desired destination.
Please note, that the Minnie Vans can only be accessed through the Lyft app while on Disney World property, from 6:30 AM to 12:30 AM.
Personal Vehicle
Guests have the option to drive their own car or a rental vehicle while on the property too. Each Disney World resort will have their own overnight parking fees, please be sure to check out the rates ahead your stay.
Guests staying on property at a Disney Resort hotel have free theme park parking with their resort stay. This will be for any of the theme parks.
If you’re park hopping, you only pay for parking once a day and whatever your first theme park is. Then you can use that same parking pass for the rest of the day at any of the other theme parks.
Driving yourself around is a great option if you have a larger group or even younger kids that may need to go back to the hotel during the day. Using your own vehicle is a good way to do things on your own time and to skip the large bus depot lines and other transportation lines.
However, the parking lots are big and parking can sometimes take a while. There is also traffic on Disney property that buses don’t get caught in because they have their own lanes. So on busier weekends, you may get caught in lots of traffic.
Everything is always a give and take.
Disney Skyliner
The Disney Skyliner is the coolest way to get around Disney property. It’s a huge gondola that goes over water, parking lots and beautiful scenic areas.
Each gondola seats about 8 adults but depends on if you have strollers or lots of bags, etc.
The Skyliner doesn’t go to every property but it does go to some pretty high traffic areas.
You can check out the Disney skyliner map to plan out your path between parks and hotels.
The gondolas can have a long line at peak times but they usually move pretty quickly because of how they load them. Similar to Haunted Mansion, the gondolas don’t stop moving loading and unloading.
If you have the chance to take the skyliner, even just to go check out another resort, do it. They are tons of fun and you can catch some beautiful views and sunsets.
Bus Transportation
Disney buses serve as the lifeblood of intra-park transportation, ferrying guests to and fro with unmatched efficiency. Mastering the intricacies of bus transportation can revolutionize your Disney World experience.
A network of buses crisscrosses the vast expanse of Walt Disney World, linking all resorts, theme parks, and other attractions. These buses operate regularly, providing reliable transportation throughout the day and into the evening hours.
Timing is paramount when utilizing Disney buses. Avoiding peak hours, typically during park opening and closing times, can mitigate overcrowding and minimize wait times, ensuring swift transportation to your desired destination.
Strategically selecting accommodations near bus stops can expedite your journey to various attractions. Resorts like Disney’s Pop Century Resort and Disney’s Art of Animation Resort boast prime locations, providing expedited access to bus transportation.
For transportation to destinations not serviced by the monorail, our fleet of buses provides convenient and reliable service. With routes connecting all areas of the resort, including theme parks, hotels, and entertainment districts, Disney World buses ensure you reach your destination with ease.
Boats and Ferries
Traversing the picturesque waterways of Disney World, boats and ferries offer a serene mode of transportation. Whether cruising across Seven Seas Lagoon or navigating through Disney Springs, these aquatic journeys add an extra touch of enchantment to your travels.
Experience the magic of Disney World from a different perspective aboard our scenic boats. Whether you’re crossing the Seven Seas Lagoon or exploring the waterways of Disney Springs, our boat transportation offers a relaxing way to travel between destinations.
Walking Paths
Walking is another great option to get around Disney World but it’s not usually the fastest or the easiest.
From your hotel, you can usually walk to the surrounding hotels and maybe one theme park…if you’re lucky.
Because Disney World is so large, there are a number of highways between the Parks and hotels.
Walking paths have been created to connect certain parts of the property but not all.
Check out the full list of running and walking trails on the Disney World property for more details.
Walking is a great option to check out your hotels surround areas and for a nice break outside. But if you’re not at one of the hotels that’s basically connected to a theme park, you won’t be able to walk to any of the theme parks.
Rideshare: Uber and Lyft
One of the most popular ways to get around Disney World property is using rideshare apps.
Lyft seems to be the rideshare sponsor for Disney World, so it will be easier to use than Uber but both are available.
Ubers and Lyfts are a great option if you’re not staying on Disney World property and you don’t have a vehicle. They are also a good option if you’re trying to rush to a reservation at a hotel or theme park. The Disney bus transportation can sometimes have long waits and isn’t as reliable. If you’re in a rush, I like calling a car.
Explore Alternative Transportation Methods
In addition to traditional modes of transportation, Walt Disney World offers alternative methods for getting around the resort.
Guests can opt for bicycles, surrey bikes, and even watercraft rentals at different property locations.
These unique transportation options are more for recreation than they are to get from park to park but they are fun to do!
Renting a bike or booking a private boat ride is a great way to check out the property too.
Plan Ahead for Accessibility Needs
Walt Disney World is committed to providing accessible transportation options for guests with additional mobility needs.
From wheelchair-accessible buses to specialized transportation services, Disney ensures that all guests can navigate the resort comfortably and independently.
Prior to your visit, be sure to contact Disney Guest Services to discuss your specific accessibility needs and arrange for appropriate accommodations during your stay.
